When Opie kills he mother bird on the "Opie the Birdman" episode on the Andy Griffith.
One of the greatest lines in television history...
Opie: “The cage sure looks awful empty, don’t it, Pa?”
Andy: “Yes, son, it sure does. But don’t the trees seem nice and full?”

Here's an oldie.
"Knots Landing," when Greg Sumner's wife died, leaving him the single dad of a newborn.
Also, when Danny(?) got drunk and plowed into the black neighbor's wife during an ice cream run.

Two that were mentioned already: MASH finale, & the episode when Colonel Blake died.
Cheers episode when Diane left. "Have a good life..."
Michael J. Fox's last (starring) episode of Spin City. I never really watched that show either, but when he came out to take his final bow, I lost it.

AJ Cook's last episode on Criminal Minds (I didn't know at the time they were going to bring her back.)
That whole deal with Hotch's wife got me too.
When Dr. Mark Greene (Anthony Edwards) died on ER. When his daughter puts the headphones on him and it's playing "Over the Rainbow" I just lost it.

What was sad about the office that compares to anything mentioned above? Were you torn up with the bird died?

Yeah. And then there was the little episode where Michael left the show.

+1. Masterful television right there.

Forgot about that episode of Futurama about Fry's dog. That ending was one of the saddest moments in a cartoon ever.

Eh, it would have been more powerful if the show hadn't already started sucking so much, but it was relatively sad and well done. Just not comparable IMO to some of the ones named up above in terms of sheer power
