I went and saw it at the theater last night too. I agree with pretty much everything in the OP.
Only thing I liked a little better was the extra scenes with Apollo talking about his motivation and the eulogy scene where Duke gave the main eulogy to the gathered and then Rocky speaks emotionally to Apollo.

I remember the Rocky IV movie trailers featuring the American and soviet gloves approaching slowly, with previews of the movie interspersed, culminating int the gloves contacting and exploding.
Maybe it wasn't exactly like that but I DO remember them being in the promo material.
They took the exploding gloves from the opening out.
