FFS, it wasn't Ward and June Cleaver, but it was 80's Hollywood's version of a typical middle America family.

A family with 3 or 4 boys... yeah. Actually closer to normal than not.

At the end of the day he chose to leave his wife and children and go with the aliens. Pretty sad.
I told my wife at the get-go that if NASA said they needed a fat white guy with an unusual level of comic book knowledge who knew all of the words to Freebird, I'm on the first one way trip to Mars.

She asked me how many pairs of underwear she should pack for me.

Dreyfuss's character was under the influence of some type of mystical attraction to Devil's Tower due to some unexplained powers that the aliens had. He was drawn there and could not resist. The aliens selected various people and basically put some type of spell or mind control on them. on them.
They wanted him for their version of Y2K. He knew about low level wiring and wasn't afraid to go up in a bucket.
