Rewatching game of thrones and noticed something I don’t really get with Ned starks twist

Why is all of the “honorable” men like ser barristan not honoring the words of king Robert when he orders Ned stark to be the regent? Cersei just kinda tears up the paper and hand waves it but everyone there heard and saw it? Why the frick would they just go along with this outright treachery? That’s not how medieval kingdoms worked

I would chime in but I haven’t watched Game of Thrones since 2019. I don’t think anyone has - do you remember the ending?

Cersei had the power at this time, paid for the Gold Cloaks and Janos. They all thought at the time Joffrey was the rightful king. I'm sure book readers have more input.
I'm doing my first rewatch since the original release myself, just started s0301.

It’s not even about Joffrey not being the rightful king in the show it’s Robert’s words that said he was to be regent to Joffrey even ser baristan reads it then Cersei’s tears it up and just ignores it but the kings guard just go along with it, even though they shouldn’t. Even if she bought off the gold cloaks and had her Lannister men the kings guard should be honor bound to carry out the kings orders

It was a mistake by Robert to order everyone out of the room when he told Ned

Well I’m talking about when Ned hands the unbroken seal of Robert to see barristan to be read aloud that places Ned stark as regent to the king. Which cearsei tears up, and everyone just goes along with it. Makes no sense other than the Lannister men and gold cloaks who were bought off. But why would the kings guard not honor Robert’s words?

Because the kingsguard at that time was arguably the worst in its history. Barristan was the only one with a shred of honor. In the show, we only really see Meryn Trant be a shite head. In the books, they’re all shite heads.

This will all be explained in The Winds of Winter

It's just the power of the Lannisters, and how they had already established influence with the people you're referencing.
Sure, Sellmy could have said something but what would that accomplish? He's a great fighter but a minor lord and his duty is to Geoff at that time, still. Remember, Selmy served as a member of the Kingsguard for the Mad King following his vows out of honor and duty rather than approving of the king's atrocities. The honor he relies on has nothing to do with the political bickerings of the major houses. He's from a minor house with nothing to his name but the Kingsguard.
This is why when he's dismissed, he immediately goes to Dany

Barristan Selmy is an honorable man but he's not necessarily courageous at that point.
He stood by the Mad King when he was committing atrocities and then served Robert as soon as Robert took power. He is defending the crown, not the person.
He also had no reason to think that Joffrey was illegitimate. He had Ned saying one thing and Cersei another and he didn't really have a reason to believe Ned because he didn't know his secret.
And when the Gold Cloaks turned it was essentially over no matter what Selmy had done. They outnumbered the Kings Guard by quite a bit and it would have just been a slaughter.

Part of the whole theme of the series is that "honor" is mostly nonsense and anyone honorable dies
