I think the sounds help it a lot too
I think if it weren’t for Spielbergs choice on no music, and crank up the sound, it would be a comical death.
As others have said, Bruce looks pretty bad when he hops up on the boat and starts chomping.
But Spielberg’s decision to crank up the sound effects make it. Quints panicked breathing as he kicks to stay out of its mouth, the water and boat creaking, the splashing from Quint, then he gets chomped and the sound effect and the blood spurting out of Quints mouth, then Jaws silently takes him under the water. After all that you’re kind of like holy shite, and forget how bad Bruce looked.
Masterful scene, and the choice of no music at all is what makes it

It's pretty good. But I think the lawyer getting eaten off the toilet by a tyrannosaurus after running away from the kids in Jurassic Park is up there.

I disagree, I think it looks badass.
That huge mouth just moving up and down is crazy looking with the boat halfway in the water.

People complaining that the shark jumping on the boat was unrealistic is forgetting that Jaws is a monster movie at the end of the day. It’s just that every single aspect from direction to acting, score and editing is so top notch and perfect that it elevates it’s status far beyond monster/horror movie.

Just happened to see this on Facebook the other day - Robert Shaw taking a break while filming that scene.

Robert Shaw

Robert Shaw's acting is good.
That scene is dog shite from a technical perspective

I do agree with you. But the shark “jumping on the boat” and the mouth moving were both so overly ridiculous and fake looking.
Thanks Marty.

I once pulled a 4- to 5-foot bull shark into a boat in a net doing some research, and it absolutely did that. Head and tail movement side-to-side as it chomped
One time I caught a 16 footer off Montauk. Had to stick 2 barrels in him. 2 to wear him down and bring him up.
