1. What the heck is going on politically? The resistance, republic, first order etc. At least in the prequels they made it clear that the separatists and republic controlled different areas.
2. Who is snoke? How would the emporer not have known about him unless he's plaegus.
3. Why did they have another dessert planet and giant planet destroyer? Could they not have gone another route?
Loved the film though and very excited for the direction it goes. Thanks for the help

The way it seemed to me, the resistance is kind of like a covert ops of the republic used to make sure that the First Order was held at bay in hopes of avoiding a third Galactic War in the matter of 60 years.

I feel like this will be answered in VIII

1. The Republic runs a chunk of the Galaxy and the First order runs another. They're in a Cold War. The Resistance fights against the First Order often and they are funded by the Republic in a poorly kept secret. Leia has been trying to convince the Republic to go to war officially. They were close to doing that before their government got blowed up. (I got that tidbit from the book)
2. We don't know, and we aren't supposed to know. The prevailing theory is that he is Plagueis, but if they gave all the answers in movie 1 of a trilogy then there's no room for more reveals.
3. The movie is a soft reboot. It's a way to let the audience know we're back to the good ole days. The story is set up to where I seriously doubt we'll have the same things going forward. This one set the tone of Star Wars being Star Wars again, and now the story is set to go in s new direction.

Thanks for the great info! Glad they didn't do prequel level politics but hope they say more about what's going on overall in the next episode

I agree with above poster. Abrams was letting everyone know he's all about going back to the core and it's in good hands.
In due time we will have answers

What the heck is going on politically?Well, if you use the classic terminology, the last time a Republic that was very big (with a Senate) and turned into an Empire, that was Rome.
We are seeing the galaxy fall into the Dark Ages. The last of the rebuilt Republic just fell at the hands of the First Order (barbarians), and we're going to see petty feudal territories afterwards.

The Senate needs to return to Corususant.

The Rome parallel happens in Episode 3. Chancellor Palpatine declares himself emperor and turns the Republic into the Empire. The Republic in Ep 7 is a completely separate one. It doesn't come into power until after Palpatine is killed in Ep 6.

Here is an article that I found that tries to explain it:
