The movie takes place in NYC. Why does the final scene look like it’s in California.
Anyone know where this scene was filmed?

They never said it was NYC.
They purposefully left the location vague.
They shot in LA, but also in some of the more rundown (New Yorkier) places in LA to give it a kind of LA/NYC hybrid feel.
(Edit: Truth be told, the first time I watched it, I just naturally assumed that the setting was LA. But no character ever states the setting. And Fincher and the production designer have stated they were going for a fictional town with the hybrid aspects of both NYC and LA.
Also, the library Somerset visits was the location used for the bank in the Jim Carrey movie The Mask [1994].)

I may as well have been Seattle, it rained during the whole movie.

Yeah I definitely never got an LA vibe. Much more Gotham, but maybe Midwest like Chicago or Detroit

Location was left unnamed on purpose in the movie

For the same reason Harlan County, Kentucky looks like California countryside in Justified.

"Se7en" ended up setting an odd record when it was recognized by a popular electronic-trivia system used in the U.S. as part of a question that was easily the most wrongly-answered one in the system's history. The question was, "What city does SE7EN take place in?" Most respondents answered New York City, with the remainder being divided between other Northeastern cities (including Boston and Philadelphia) and only a few correctly answering that the location of the film is unspecified
Fincher likely wanted it vague so he had his own world to play in.

I've still never seen the alternate ending

Filmed in LA but the plot is not located in LA specifically

There's an alternate ending?

I always thought it was set in Seattle. Haven't seen it in a long time but I guess I didn't realize that the setting was unspoken/vague. I always thought it was Seattle and they ended up in the desert down in California for some reason lol idk. Great movie, need to rewatch.

Not really. The original cut of the film ended with a smash cut to credits once Mills kills John Doe.
Tests audiences were floored by the shocking ending.
The producer convinced Fincher to add a denouement to give the audience a teeny-tiny bit of a chance to process what they just saw.

Oh I thought they had an entirely different ending. Bummer.
