First of all, let me say that I absolutely love this movie; if its on, I am watching it. The question I have is, how in the fonk did this fat mother fonker ever get signed off on serving in a submarine, let alone Chief of the Boat?

I’ve actually served on a submarine with a guy that weighed 70lbs more than the COB in that movie
Dude was fat AF. Former OL at Annapolis who gained more weight after football. Dude was shaped like Gru in Minions. Cool guy though

You've clearly never met a Chief Petty Officer. Most of them are fat and out of regs.

Idk but that actor has an interesting early life story. He was born in Europe to parents who were slave laborers under the Nazis. His baby years were spent in refugee camps.
And to show how out of touch with the military I am, I thought his characters name was actually Cobb. And I thought Viggo Mortensons character was named Wepps.

True that. I have, however, been in a submarine, and I felt uncomfortable as a 6’0” 190 lb man. Can’t imagine how a 250 lb man would feel.

Same. DIRSUP. We had this one guy who really struggled every time he squeezed into Radio. It was entertaining to watch until he had to squeeze by me to get to his position.

He’d be ok at that weight.
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the movie, but I think he ordered someone to drop down and give him 20, which would have gotten him keel hauled.

It was one of the officers (played by James Gandolfini). Funnily enough, Wikipedia has him listed as the SUPPO (supply officer), who is the lowest ranking officer on the boat. There is absolutely no way he would have gotten away with that BS. Also...there isn't a single officer in the U.S. Submarine Force who would have pulled a stunt like that.

Had a navy buddy that used to joke that as long as you could fit through the hatches you were good.

No offense to sailors who already posted (and the Army did cultivate a decent crop of fatties over my service there, but it wasn't always that way) - true story, funny story.
About 30 years ago, I attended a joint school out West. School is run by the Army, but has young troops from all branches and even some civilian agencies. On weekends, you would see the kids wandering around post and into town in civvies. You could tell the Marines (the males anyway), because they had identical haircuts. Black, white, tall, short, they were unmistakable. The country was thinner back then and so were the young troops (and so was I) - the Army and Air Force kids all looked alike.
Almost all the sailors, male or female, were fat (except the SEALs, of which we had a handful).

I was not. I just sat in the radio room. I wasn't ship's company, I was Direct Support.

None taken, dude. I am fairly fit, have been in the Navy for eight years now, and am truly disgusted with the state of our branch's physical fitness. I have heard all the excuses about deployments, standing duty, and all of that jazz. I don't give a shite. We're in the military and we're supposed to look good in the uniform. I can't believe how many pot bellies we have in the U.S. Navy right now. It's unreal.

I know an AF member and still has to pass pt tests. Do other branches not do these tests anymore? I honestly don't know.

The TV show Forged In Fire did a five-part series centered on the military. The first show had contestestants representing the Army, the second the Marines, the third the Air Force and the fourth the Navy, with the winners of each episode meeting in the Finale.
All of the contestants in the first three shows all looked like military people; fit, good posture, and clean cut. The fourth show with the Navy guys was hilarious because all of the contestants were fat slobs and horrible metalsmiths.
I figured it had to be some kind of inside joke for the producers of the show. No way that was representative of the Navy. I hope.

I forgot it was the Chop (suppo) that dropped him!
Note: The supply officer is usually the only officer on board who is not nuclear qualified, and can thus never stand either of the 2 most senior watch stations (Submerged Officer of the Deck and Engineering Officer of the Watch). An Ensign coming in will be more qualified than them in about 3 weeks.

Warning; Never, ever watch this movie with anyone who was a submariner unless you want to hear it get ripped to shreds.

Every branch does its own physical fitness assessment. The Navy's is a joke, however. For instance...in order for me to pass a Physical Readiness Test without having to participate in remedial PT, I have to do the following: 41 push-ups, plank for 1 minute, 55 seconds, and run 1.5 miles in 13 minutes, 45 seconds. Next year, after I have turned 35, I'll only have to do 37 push-ups, a 1 minute, 50-second plank, and a 1.5 mile run in 14 minutes, 8 seconds to pass.
It's absolutely disgraceful that the standards are that low. And you wouldn't believe what they are for women at the same age (14 push-ups, the same plank standards, and 15 minutes, 53 seconds to run 1.5 miles). Right now I personally can do between 70-80 push-ups, plank for over two minutes, and can run 1.5 miles in under 10 minutes.

The sub force has a way of keeping fatties in that are really good at their job. I was a nuke EM and the reactor operator I stood watch with everyday was pushing near 300. He was far and away the best nuke ET (reactor operator) we had on board.
My good buddy was 6’6” and had to get a waiver to serve on subs. He regretted getting that waiver every day he was on board.
