"The Rape of Europa" is on Netflix, it's about the theft and destruction of great works of art by the Nazis and the effort by the allies to hunt them down and return them to their rightful owners and homes.

Very interesting - I had no idea the American army had a whole division made up of art professors, dealers, and historians whose mission was to find these masterpieces and get them home safely.

I also never knew how many priceless and irreplaceable works of art and architecture were lost during WWII.

Don't bother with this one. It sucks and is boring.

Agree on how scary Jesus Camp is...that's some eye-opening shite.

I started a thread last week about two that I watched, but it got exactly one response. the two docs were I.O.U.S.A., which is about the national debt, and The Art of the Steal, which is about the Barnes Foundation (art collection) and how the Philadelphia government is going completely against Barnes's will and basically stealing his collection. Both were really interesting. IOUSA was more informative/less entertaining, but AotS was great.

Cocaine Cowboys. It's about the cocaine trade in Miami in the 1980s. Crazy stuff.

I'll second both "the rape of europa" and "cocaine cowboys".

"Imaginary Witness" was also good. It's about how Hollywood dealt with Nazi Germany and particularly the Holocaust. It also goes into how the Holocaust has been portrayed in film since.

Exit Through the Gift Shop is supposed to be great.

Yes! I highly recommend this.

Yeah, it didn't sound like something I'd like at all but I watched it based on the high rating. One of the best movies I've seen, period.

I watched Marjoe a while ago and would recommend it - it won best documentary for 1972.

The plot synopsis from Netflix:

quote:

This Oscar-winning documentary explores the life of one-time child evangelist and faith healer Marjoe Gortner. The son of professional evangelists, Gortner was preaching on the Southern tent-revival circuit by the age of 3. Twenty-eight at the time of the film's release, Gortner freely admits to being a scam artist -- but still maintains a compelling charisma, possibly explaining his later career as an actor in B movies and in 1974's Earthquake.

Like many people I've always thought many of the televangelists were bald-faced charlatans who willfully preyed upon the gullible. But watching a movie like this where that behavior was revealed so boldly was still difficult. It is hard not to feel a strange mixture of pity and revulsion for the central character (Marjoe Gortner)
