He really doesn't treat everyone like crap.

He is pretty nice, actually. Remember the episode when he had everyone over to his house for the BBQ? And then Michael shows up and he sing karaoke with him?

All of the characters are pretty nice, overall. That is the point of the show.

I am not saying that Pam was completely horrible. I just mean that she is selfish and always was. She uses Jim, even though she genuinely cares about him.

The characters were not at all one-dimensional, which makes the show so good, in my opinion.

Stanley had an affair. Oscar ends up gay. Dwight is really complex. Angela goes back and forth between men and her relationship with the Senator exposes her insecurities. Michael just wants to be loved. Overall, it was brilliant writing.

Pam is really cute and you are pulling for her, but when you look back, she should have dropped Roy long ago. I guess that she just wanted to be loved too and hoped that Roy would love her.

it is all quite sad and very normal.

Kevin and creed were the best characters in the show.

The best moments are without a doubt the interactions between Michael and Toby

Remember the episode where Andy tries to use his experience with Angela to help him, and he acts like a giant douche to him and embarrasses him in front of the whole office to get back at him?

Roy was controlling and aggressive, but think about it. How many guys are going to let their fiance just flirt at will and lead on another dude?

Guys (and women) are possessive in general. I don't know the timeline, I think it was like 3-4 years engaged. Roy dropped the ball for sure, but I think he got a bad rap on the show. If Pam loves Roy then take his flaws and work through it. If Pam loves Jim then stop being a selfish bitch.

I know they wrote Roy to be a dick into the show, but dude had legitimate gripes initially IMO.

IMO they turned Toby into a creepy weirdo. I liked it so much when Toby was the straight man in the office to Michael's whims. Instead they made his character unlikable because of his weirdness.

He then takes Andy aside and has an honest discussion with him, basically telling him everything's going to be better.

On the topic of Roy, it's pretty clear that Pam was holding him back. Once he left the office he was on to much bigger and better things. (Roy's Wedding)

The teasing was not mean-spirited, in pulling Andy's leg he actually helped him out a great deal by forcing him to realize what a clown he was being about the Angela situation.

+1

I think they did that to show why Michael hated him so much.

You ever been around a middle aged divorced forever alone miserable man? They just slowly erode into creepiness. He always had a crush on Pam. One of the funniest moments is when he gets to spend the whole day with her and he's actually normal and she compliments him and he accidentally pits his hand on her leg.

Then he just says.... I'm... moving to Costa rica

I agree, but think it was great the way it was. Toby, although a misfit himself, had one job - to throw logic at Micheal's silly antics/policies. It worked so well initially.

Michael comes up with some unbelievably incorrect solution to an office incident, Toby says you can't do that, Michael does it any way, mayhem ensues.

You wouldn't want Toby as a guy on top of his game because it would derail Michael. Instead, you have him lonely, kind of just doing his job out of regularity. That way Michael gets to do his schtick, but with a "roadblock". Making Toby mostly irrelevant because of his creepiness hurt the dynamic.

No, he was a fricking smug douche who did a decent job of hiding it before getting with Pam (who is a whole different issue).

Yep.

Yes, of course, but this is a show with limited characters. Hamstringing a character that worked so well initially wasn't the best option IMO.

This is what I thought was wrong about how they made his character.

Lonely, sure. Desperate, perhaps. There are plenty of guys like that I've worked with that just do their job and when they're shot down, they cower back. Think Office Space.

Hell no. He was just getting his kicks, because he's a huge dick.

I doubt the people calling Jim a dick have really seen the show in its entirety or are more than casual fans, it seems like the only justification for calling him a dick is that he pranks Dwight, Michael, and Andy throughout the show- the three characters who account for 90% of office conflicts.

Jim helps all three of these characters at multiple points throughout the show- one of the most notable examples is in the episode "Last Day in Florida." Jim tries to warn Dwight about how Robert California is setting him up to take the fall for the Sabre pyramid debacle.

*Not only does he try to warn Dwight, but attempts to physically block him from going to the meeting- it actually works as it delays Dwight's arrival and Robert has to blame Packer for the store's failure.

No, I've watched the entire series multiple times. He's just a dick who thinks he's better than everyone.

the office was ruined and went into an overdrive of frickery once jim and pam got together

a lot of the complaints in this thread were basically contrived bullshite drama to keep the dying dog alive afterwards
