The problem is it’s a 5 hour show that has a small handful of awards people actually care about. “Oh cool here are two random women accepting an award for set design in that movie I didn’t see.”
The Oscars have always had that issue

I remember when I was a kid, maybe mid '80s. Johnny Carson had on some actress who I guess was nominated that year. Carson talked about her movie and whether she might win or whatever, but then said, "Let's be honest, the main reason people watch every year is... To see what the women are wearing."

It was a deep class with no elites.

The dummy's on here mistake depth for quality. Lotta pretty good movies and 1 great.

I mean, these are either box office or Netflix movies for the most part. It’s not as if Lifetime movies are nominated.

I thought he meant not being able to watch the Oscars bc you cut the cord. Not unable to watch the movies bc you cut the cord.

I used to look forward to and watch the program every year until it became a political platform.

It has been at least 10 years since I watched it.

I can find that kind of stuff in a lot of other places that I ignore.

Omg what a small number.

It kind of is when you consider there were 41 million viewers 10 years ago

I don't think that's the problem. The average length of the Oscars is roughly 3 1/2 hours.

Going back to 1990s, here are the number of total viewers:

(viewers in million)

1990: 40.24
1991: 42.7
1992: 44.44
1993: 45.7
1994: 46.26
1995: 48.28
1996: 44.81
1997: 40.08
1998: 57.25 ("The Titanic Factor")
1999: 45.51
2000: 46.52
2001: 42.9
2002: 41.82
2003: 33.04 (We go to war with Iraq, possible backlash to celebrity criticism)
2004: 43.56
2005: 42.14
2006: 38.94
2007: 39.92
2008: 31.7
2009: 36.94
2010: 41.62
2011: 37.9
2012: 39.46
2013: 40.38
2014: 43.74
2015: 37.26
2016: 34.42
2017: 33.0
2018: 26.5
2019: 29.6
2020: 23.6

People were watching until they weren't all of a sudden.

Still had 21 million more viewers than the XFL on Sunday had. Don't think you need to worry about the Oscars

Its funny to see such a small list of "good movies" . Go back and look at what came out in 1984. Its insane. It just seems like the number of good movies that are coming out each year is getting smaller and smaller

I turned on my tv and saw a guy and gal dressed like freaks. I thought it was my recording of the oscars, but it turned out to be let’s make a deal

Dumbest statement in this thread. A lot of great movies came out this past year. And Parasite is the most legit best picture winner probably of the past decade.

So you haven't watched since the mid-70s, or do you just notice the politics now because Twitter tells you to?

I think the problem is all the movies that are winning best picture are indie or obscure films. there aren’t any titanics or Forrest Gump; ie. massive blockbusters that are also serious contenders for best picture and director (not something like black panther that gets a sympathy nomination).
