Well its one of the few true classics I had yet to see, so I decided to watch it tonight. Boy did it not disappoint. Great film, great characters, and Nurse Ratched is probably the best female villain ever put to film (only one who I think can compare is Annie Wilkes in Misery). I'd say this has potential to be in my top 10, which is saying alot. Great film and couldn't recommend it enough.

Watched this for the first time last week myself. Couldn't agree more. You can see why Bob Kane stated in no uncertain terms that Jack should play the Joker in 1989. Definitely this is one of the greats and deserving of every accolade you have ever heard.

Jack was money in the 70s had he stopped acting then he'd still be remembered.

Before the movie I had to read the book back in 1972 as a college assignment.
This is one of those movies that's "great" only because the source material is great. When I saw it for the first time I couldn't get past Jack Nicholson merely being Jack Nicholson and not Murphy of the book. Louise Fletcher completely butchered Nurse Ratched, too... that was supposed to be ACTING? Her Oscar for the role is a fricking joke.

And people say exactly the same thing about "The Shining".

Seriously? This is my favorite movie of all time, has been since I was a kid (I'm only 22). I've read the book twice and I kind of see what you're saying about Jack putting his own spin on McMurphy and not totally following the book.
But the Nurse Ratched character is SPOT ON with the book. She absolutely killed it. I'm not sure where you get any of that from.
On another note, I used to watch this with my mom. The scene where the cigarette goes in Christopher LLoyd's pants leg made her crack up every time.
Also, Always Sunny has parodied this film several times, b/c of Devito. Big Chief's son was on an episode, I forget which one.

Thats one of the great things about this film. She really wasnt a villain. She was in charge of a fricking nut house. Nicholson comes in under false pretenses and becomes this anti-hero.
She really was just doing her job. If I walked in the next morning after the "party" I would have given the whole bunch lobotomies!

No she wasn't. Any decent minded individual would have kicked Jack Nicholson out of there, but she wanted him to truly suffer there for the rest of his days.
