I absolutely can't stand Kima Greggs. She's awful IMO. Like Snoop level awful.

Snot Boogie couldnt change who he was even if he tried. This is the central point for 5 seasons, these people cant change, they're just trying to get by, being who they are. It's the game, pawns, queens, kings, castles, who they are is who they will always be, there is no true redemption in Ballmer, everything has a steep price.

Yup. That's why that opening conversation is so great. It really shows you the central theme of the show. And these first two episodes are really full of shite like that. The McNuggets scene. The "wars end" scene." The "You can't win if you don't play" scene. The chess scene is coming up this week I believe.

It's just crazy how most of the conversations and lines of dialogue actually mean something really deep, even this early in the show.
quote:

- cant believe how juvenile Herc and Carver are at this point in the beginning, they really are just a couple punks

Yeah, I remember hating Herc so much the first time around, and that hasn't changed. When do we get to see New Iberia Haircut Guy (Colecci, I think?)?

quote:

- ah, Bodie. Rolling his eyes in discontent already. D barely gets his intros out of the way and Bodie already has his bullshite detector on high

Bodie is my N word. I love that dude. Top five character for me, maybe even top three.
quote:

-never truly appreciated the fact that this is the first time McNulty and Bodie meet. In the pit, on the couch..........not yet Jimmy

Can't wait to see that relationship develop, leading to one of the best scenes/conversations of the whole series later on.
quote:

I never appreciated just how well these first 2 episodes really set the stage for the entire series. We are not only introduced to every key player, but also get to know them, and what makes them tick, their motivation. High points and low points notwithstanding, the success and praise of this show really can be pinpointed back to just how masterfully this first 120 minutes were put to film.

Agreed. Really fantastic intro to the show, these first few episodes. And like I said, it's not just the characters, but the overall feel and themes of the show. We already get a great feel of Baltimore, as well as how "the game" works for everybody (and some much more than others, as we already are seeing).

Nice work, Stu. Posts like these are gonna make this thread thrive.

Seemed like Bubs was already a CI for Greggs and Johnny getting his arse kicked was the reason he was helping this time.

Right, but I mean mainly on the Barksdale crew. Johnny getting beat down is what made Bubbz get with Kima and feed her info that gets this whole ivnestigation started and jumpstarts McNulty's case(s). And he's doing it for free.

And then McNulty gives him a 20 and Kima gets all pissed.

D was definitely soft. And he is smart, but not as smart as he thinks he is

My thoughts exactly. He thinks he's smarter than he actually is, and he should be doing bigger/better things. Somewhat entitled. The scene when he gets back to the towers and Stringer tells him he's working the pit shows a bit of that entitlement. I'm sure he worked to move up originally, but, still, he screwed up. Back to the bottom for him.

First time watcher and no clue how or if I'm right, but my prediction for D, especially after talking, he dead.

It almost seemed like Bubz and Kima were related in that first scene. Like a cousin that got in too deep and now that's just who he is. She just leaves him alone and vice versa, until he has a reason to narc.

Part of the reason I say he is a bitch. Compare him to the other top gangsters. They were feared because they had no problem getting their hands dirty......but this is a conversation for a later time.

I don't know. When it comes down to it Dee does what he has to do but he doesn't just blindly do it without questioning why(my criteria for being "smart"). He isn't a soldier, which later in the series you see truly how the organization breaks down. He is a lieutenant who worked his way up, after fricking up he truly realizes what the game is all about. I don't think he is soft at all, he isn't a soldier though.

Yup. And it's another reason that he likely shined in the pit before, and got promoted originally. he knows his shite for pit-level shite, but above that and he's out of his zone.

That's why he gets attached to the kids in the pit I think, because to them he's super smart and teaches them shite they wouldn't normally be able to recognize. But to the leaders of the game, he's in way over his head and can be a liability sometimes.

I have the exact opposite opinion of him. I like Dee's character. Glad to have opposing views though.

Omar Comin
Que farmer and the dell

Looking at it, no one even knew who Barksdale and Bell were beside Jimmy and other detectives maybe.

Omar wasn't terrorizing B&B yet. Wasn't he more on the east side

I like Dee as well. All things considering he was a good dude born in the wrong family. Uncle being Avon and his mom was more than ok with him being in the game.

As i said earlier, he didnt have the heart for it. He wasnt about dat life yo, lol
