I guess you have to be shorter than 5'6" to be in SHIELD

I can't remember fully but I thought this was implied in the movie that Fury pretended he was dead to get the Avengers to come together. There was something with the trading cards.

Just that the trading cards being on his person was faked.

I am curious to hear about Coulson's death as well. In the short film Marvel One-Shot: Item 47, they seem to act like Coulson is either dead or no longer working for SHIELD.

Thats always been the logical move.
If he was willing to lie about the playing cards being in Coulson's jacket he surely would have been willing to lie about him actually dying.
In a way Fury is kind of like Loki. He does not care how he gets what he wants. Everything is a means to an end with him.
