quote:
1. Mad Men -- So many standout episodes and great moments this season. There was a stretch midway through where every episode was a grand slam. This may have been the best year ever for the show.
2. Breaking Bad -- They didn't top the whole story arc with Gus that was so tense last season. But they continued to show Walter's soul eroding. I can't wait for the end, but I know I will be disappointed once it goes.
3. Doctor Who -- I'm a huge honking nerd. It was a short season this year, but it more than made up for the disappointment last season. Every episode was like a little movie.
4. Game of Thrones - I really started to get this show this season.
5. 30 Rock -- Funniest show on TV
6. Parks and Recreation -- They really hit a high note with Leslie's run for public office. The debate episode was damn good. I even got a little choked up during it.
7. Louie -- You never know what direction the show will take. I loved the bit with David Lynch as Louie's talk show guru. And the episode with him going to Miami and meeting a cool young guy.
8. Sherlock -- Benedict Cumberbatch is God.
9. The Walking Dead -- Another show that gets better and better.
10. Eastbound and Down -- I don't like how it ended, but the episode with Kenny at his buddy Shane's funeral may have been one of the funniest things ever. And Lily Tomlin as Kenny's mom was genius casting.
Note: I haven't watched the current season of Homeland yet. I was waiting until it all wrapped up to watch it in a couple of big gulps.
Edited: Because I forgot Eastbound and Down's third season aired in 2012.
solid posting, thanks for the blurbs.

This is only based on shows I actually watched this year, and of those, these are the top ten that I thought did good work in 2012.
1) Community - The second half of their third season had some of the best episodes of the entire series. The L&O ep, the Ken Burns ep, the Oceans 11 ep, and the episode with John Hodgman.
2) Walking Dead - 2012 was a turning point for the series as the 2nd half of season two really started to speed up the action and season 3's first half may have been the best set of episodes of the series thus far.
3) New Girl - Similar to Walking Dead, it really hit its stride early in 2012, which was the back half of the debut season. Season two has started of strong as well on both the character and comedy fronts.
4) Sons of Anarchy - This is the first season I've watched since maybe Season 2, so I can't really say how it stands as part of the overall series, but it definitely had some of the best episodes of television I watched all year.
5) Mad Men - had some up and down episodes, but some very memorable moments.
6) Archer - Not it's best season, but still better than just about everything else on TV. Lo Scandolo was probably my highlight of the season.
7) Arrow - Strong debut for the DC comic book character, hasn't really been much of an off episode. The writing has been really strong even if the acting hasn't been all the way there.
8) Being Human (US Version) - Overall I enjoyed the whole season. I didn't always like the development of the characters, but it was still well done.
9) Bob's Burgers - Probably the show on the list I've seen the fewest episodes of. It's unique and weird but generally really funny.
10) Bunheads - Yes, a person can enjoy both Sons of Anarchy and this show. Most people have not heard of it. Created by the brains behind Gilmore Girls, it's basically an extension of that with fast paced, witty dialogue. It's a guilty pleasure, which about the best you can hope for with a show on ABC Family.
Hon Mention - Psych (only 6 eps in 2012), Franklin & Bash (good popcorn TV), Suits (Probably number 11 on my list), The League and IASIP have both been disappointing. South Park was down. And there aren't many other shows I watched this year that aren't listed.
ETA: Can you tell I don't get premium channels?

1. Once Upon a Time-an interesting take on fairytale books and movies from the creators of Lost.
2. Game of Thrones-what's not to like. There is magic, dragons, and sex.
3. True Blood-super campy over the top vampire show taking place in Louisiana. There's blood, sex, vampires and cheesy dialogue!
4. Southpark-it makes me laugh or smh.
5. Boardwalk Empire-it's gangsta
6. Girls-hated the pilot episode but after watching the rest of this season, I am def interested season 2.

Your vote counts as much as anyone in this topic and thanks for the post, but how can a show that you openly admit is bad rank in the top 3? Even ahead of other shows that you rank? Just wondering if you truly think Boardwalk Empire is a lesser show in 2012 than True Blood or this based on your loyalty to a show that is seen by many as passed it's expiration date. Care to elaborate?
Again, thanks for the vote

1. Game of Thrones, "LOTR with titties galore".
2. Boardwalk Empire, love how it ties in with the actual history of the time.
3. Archer, just so over the top hilarious and outrageous.
4. Breaking Bad, Walt's transformation from a timid high school chemistry teacher to a meth king pin is possibly the most stunning in TV history.
5. South Park, I think this season has been has been excellent.

I didn't say it was bad! I LOVE True Blood. It has been my #1 show since season 1. It just so happens that I became obsessed with GOT and OUAT more than TB this year. I love that they don't take themselves too seriously like Twilight vampires or even Ann Rice vampires. I appreciate that they stick to vampire rules unlike Twilight vampires who fricking sparkle and walk in the sun and other stupid shite. They are also violent, which is how vampires are supposed to be.
The show is meant to be campy and over the top and I love them for it.

I wasn't into Boardwalk as much this season, so I had to rank it lower than TB.

I thought this season was much better than last season. I was glad to get away from some of the stupid stories of 2011 like the ghost lady. Learning about the Authority was interesting to me. But I can certainly see where people who were merely drive by watchers would have lost interest by now. I will say that if Sookie and Eric don't work on their relationship and if Bill doesn't die in 2013, I may have to drop TB to 5th place next year.

Since this a voting thread, I'm not really going to argue with you or try and change your mind(I'll let others do that)eta:however you seem to be predisposed to ranking TB in your top 5 as you alluded to doing so next year-worst case scenario, just wanted to get a little bit more insight into your vote and I guess what your definition of "good" TV is.
Thanks.

1. Breaking Bad -- I don't think any explanation is needed for this, it just continues to deliver week after week. I expected a drop-off after the brilliance of season 4, but it just didn't happen. Bitch.
2. Community -- Season 3 was definitely weaker than the previous two, but the show and the quirky dynamics of the group just appeals to me in a way that other shows aren't able to
3. Parks and Recreation -- Objectively I'll admit that this probably should go ahead of Community, but...I just can't do it
4. Mad Men -- Who has Don Draper become? Very engaging season watching his metamorphosis. Sally and Megan have become forces of their own, picking up the slack left by Peggy's departure. Lane Pryce, wow, what a storyline.
5. Sherlock -- Just brilliant, could probably be ranked higher. If you haven't watched it, what are you waiting for???
6. Girls -- Definitely not a show for everyone. I personally enjoy it, the incredibly awkward interactions between the cast is enough at times to create a palpable degree of tension that makes me shift uncomfortably in my seat. To me that's a credit to the writers, that they can make you actually feel what's going on with the characters.
7. Workaholics -- low-brow raunch. They do it so well and find a way to really push the envelope. In today's comedic world that's gotten harder and harder to do.
8. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia -- GREAT rebound from the mediocrity of season 7. Some high points for sure, but I wonder if the show will ever again reach the level it was at in its first few seasons
9. The League -- Just solid. Continually delivers exactly what you'd expect.
10. Justified -- obamaface.jpg
ETA: I haven't watched most of season 3 of Boardwalk Empire or any of Game of Thrones. Had I seen them it's likely they would have been on my list. Seasons 1 & 2 of BE were fantastic.
