I really liked it. One of the group was upset that it isn't true to how the joker is supposed to be, but I don’t care. Probably why I liked it. I’m not much of a comic book movie fan.

Possibly the joke is that Thomas Wayne’s son is an orphan now, just like the Joker was.

Nicholson’s Joker wasn’t how the Joker was supposed to be.
Ledger’s Joker wasn’t how the Joker was supposed to be.

Other than this I’ve only seen Nolan’s movies so I have no clue how he’s supposed to be. That was just his complaint.

I just know I liked the movie

The slow, methodical build-up in this film is amazing. When you finally get to his Joker persona your entire body is clenched.

Jesus, Phoenix is in every scene. You never come up for air. He’s fricking amazing.

I chuckled a second when young Bruce slid down that pole, and the Waynes walking out of “Zorro The Gay Blade”, until I realized it wasn’t just another shoutout.

Movie exceeded all of my expectations. frick the haters.

Joaquin Phoenix deserves Oscar buzz for his performance. Absolutely amazing.

Man, that was a bleak, bleak movie. Unbelievable performance, but I have zero desire to ever watch it again.

I’ll be real honest, wife and I left not long after the subway murder.. just a very uncomfortable movie.

I’ll watch it when it comes out

What an amazing film. I loved it, I came in with high expectations and was still blown away. I loved how they showed so many of the classic attributes of the Joker already in Arthur before he turned. If Joaquin Phoenix doesn't win an Oscar for this, they should just quit handing them out. Nobody is going to beat that performance this year.

I thought it was great.. didn’t expect him to smother his mother.. and keeping his heritage ambiguous enough was a good move. I’m glad that it leaves some mystery to it maybe Thomas Wayne covered it up but maybe Penny Fleck was nuts..

I could have used a little bit more dark humor especially on the talk show part but overall it’s great

Whoa that was an experience. Took Ledger’s Joker and dialed it up. Less angry, more sadistic. This should have been the DCEU.

Agreed. Still think Nicholson, Ledger, and now Phoenix did an amazing job with the character and are all great in their own right and films. Leto, not at all.

It’s a shame to hear that. One thing I think that’s been missing from the live action Joker’s, aside from parts of Nicholson’s, is that the Joker is actually pretty funny and cracks jokes a lot. Look at Mark Hamill’s Joker. If they could incorporate more of that along with the dark elements, that would be something.

After sleeping on it, I'm still so high on the performance. The score is also outstanding. I think the reason it feels so bleak to me is the fact it's already heavy subject matter and is just a generally bleak setting and movie. On top of that, you don't have anybody to really root for. Even in most dark/depressing movies, you have a protagonist to root for. But your protagonist in this one isn't that guy. All those factors almost suck you in to this world of misery. Really an interesting experience for a movie. I still don't think I'd want to watch again though because of that.

Sensational $13.3M start for #Joker in THU pre-shows at domestic #boxoffice. Easily beat the $10M of #Venom from same time last year. WOM from paying auds is fantastic so far. Records may crumble this wknd.

I posted this in a non-spoiler thread, but there were social media posts showing "empty theaters" and that people were avoiding this movie. Turns out starting the showings at 4pm instead of the usual later showings didn't make a big difference. People packed the later showings instead of taking off of work to see it at 4:00.
