Just got out from the IMAX.

Really enjoyed it. Definitely better than the first.

Very divergent from the book. Dogmatic fans will be upset.

The ending drew some groans and a few "are you kidding" My son suggested that the directors would need bodyguards.

Why do you think that? While the Gollum scenes come close, I think Smaug's presence alone puts it over the first one.

It's curious to me that the scenes Jackson knows he can't afford to frick up, he succeeds gloriously, but has tended to mess up or stay too long in the non-iconic scenes

While slow and more light hearted, none of it felt forced or extraneous to me.

Lots of DOS felt completely like filler and unnecessary.

It was definitely better than the first no question about it. I would give it a A-

Since you are the only one who thought the first was better you are fighting a losing battle

Just got out. I liked it a lot better than the first film. Had a lot of great action scenes. I liked the barrel scene because of how over the top it was. Saw it in 3D and it was worth it IMO.

Eh I'd like to go see it again, but not in 3D. 3D was okay, but a little too distracting to me. With that being said, I enjoyed it. Smaug was an incredible villain. I'm thankful for more landscape shots in this second installment too.

I agree with others about the different plotlines. It just feels like there's too much going on in this film. I'd like to see it again before I go more in-depth about that. FWIW, I haven't read the books, but I loved the LotR trilogy films. Still like this installment. Good movie.

The first one was really good. The 2nd just got into the meat of the book and had a lot more to play with. Just having Smaug made the 2nd better already.

So, is this worth going to see or wait until DVD?

I've honesty never heard anyone asking if they should wait till DVD to see a movie like this. That's something to ask when talking about Madea Christmas or Godzilla.

Smaug will be one of the greatest spectacles you will ever see on the big screen.
