I have enjoyed your posts as well. You're right, I'm only going off what was in the mini series as all I know about the feud comes from popular history. I was more talking about the characters motivations in the show.

The difference if in the same situation:

Anse: "Bad Frank, you go kill every McCoy you see."

Randall: "Bad Frank, I loathe everything you're about, but you're all I've got now that the honest men have been killed. Go arrest the people responsible for this and return them to Kentucky for trial."

People were actually put in a jail in Kentucky. In WVa, only the ground.

It can be viewed in that way, I just think it is naive. Bad Frank seemed to feel the same way.

Looks like the speech/letter that Devil Anse gave at the end was from an actual letter that Cap Hatfield sent to Newspapers - Letter

Made sure they got in there that they were "not the first transgressors".

One of the greatest American feud stories in our countries history and it was filmed entirely in eastern Europe. Romania to be exact. And to boot its premier is on memorial day. I'm liking what I'm seeing so far but disgusted that it couldn't be filmed in W.V. Or Kentucky or freakng somewhere else in the good ole USA

The Tug River Valley looks nothing like what they portray, nor did it in the mid-1800's. Think steep dangerous ravines and sharp jutting rocks.

I'm pretty sure every member of the McCoy family is slightly retarded

There's been some evidence that they suffered from a genetic disorder leading to ultra-aggressive and violent behavior. However the scene where the 3 sons kill Anse Hatfield's younger brother isn't entirely accurate, most generally agree that the younger Hatfield was out looking for a fight, and found one.

I enjoyed the mini-series...def hated both sides at different points and i sure as hell didn't know as much as i thought i did about this feud until i did a little reading up on it. Seems there were bloodier feuds between different families going on at the same time...one being the Howard/Baker Feud

Exactly. The Hatfield/McCoy feud really only lasted about 12 years if you ignore the time Harmon was shot...which both sides relatively did...and only 12 people were killed. The Baker/Howard feud started in the 1840s or before, and also involved two other families. It lasted until the turn of the century and estimates have been over 100 were killed. That one would make for a damn good History Channel series..."Bad Tom Baker" and all.

Baker-Howard Feud

Naive? I don't think so, but it's about as good of a counter as you could use, I guess.

What happened to the McCoy son who seemed to be the oldest and actually had it together? I don't remember seeing him die but I watched part 2 and 3 after getting home from the bar so my memory is probably failing me. Awesome series, probably going to watch again this weekend.

Pretty sure he was not shown at the end when the little bits on rest of the lives were shown.

Has there been a listing of the biggest inacurracies/problems etc. with the movies vs. what some of you know about the real history? I came to this thread pretty late.

I'm sure everyone has already bitched in this thread but what the hell was the point of only showing those for half a second?

Just seemed like they were setting up that character for something more when they were holding Johnse in the cabin.

That sucked! Fortunately, I was able to pause, then run in slow motion to read at a better pace.

The oldest son was Jim McCoy. The series didn't say what happened to him, but he lived through all this and was one of the last survivors of the feud when he died in his 80s. During the feud he was deputized and helped arrest several of the Hatfields and their supporters. In the series he was one of the wagon drivers with Phillip's posse, and was the one who grabbed Randall's drunk arse before he got shot during the big battle in the 3rd episode.

Was he the one who refused to kneel? I liked that son.

Have you listed the problems you had with the series and the inaccuracies? I am late in here.

Didn't really list them, but I did post a few contradictions. In all it looked like the series covered all the main incidents, but left out certain people involved, and combined and sometimes included people who weren't there. They also ignored the timeline somewhat. A year and a half went by before Sam and Paris McCoy shot and neutered Bill Staton and the pig trial. There were two parts to the feud with a five year gap in between. And Randall McCoy died in a cooking fire accident, not going batshit crazy shooting at a flaming Devil Anse, but it did make for good television.
