Alright how's everybody doing?

Updated the OP for current watch schedule. This week is S1, EP4-6.

We are good to discuss episodes 1-3 now.

I'm a little behind and only got to watch two episodes this past week.

Jack with the pearls man

I can kind of see (but not really ) how people maybe struggled through the first bit of the show, but even episode two picks up a pretty good bit over episode one.

Had a feeling a lot of people weren't going to be able to limit themselves to 3 episodes per week

Flint is my favorite character (so far). The portrayal by Toby Stephens is intriguing.

Not to be a stick in the mud, but I doubt that every hooker looked that great back in the day. (not a complaint though )

Yeah this is about my 3rd rewatch and i'm already on 6

Forgot how slick Silver is. Really fun watching him scheme and squirm.

Also forgot how awesome the sets, costumes, and lighting is. Really makes you feel like you're on the island.

I watched E1 (and maybe 15 mins of E2) last night and forgot just how much happened to start the season..

We get introduced to Flint/the pirates and that whole thing.
We are introduced to Eleanor and the business/trade angle of things.
We are introduced to the whoring (which plays a significant role, especially with Max).
We get to see that Max can and does frick just about everything and everyone she can get her hands on.
We meet John Silver/Rackham/Vane/Anne Bonny and almost immediately get a sense for their personalities and how they operate.
We see Flint struggle with leadership and almost lose it.
We meet Gates and Billy Bones and immediately see his loyalty to Flint tested.
We see Vane already frick shite up when he kills the black pirate and Flint loses the votes that Gates paid for.
We also learn that Vane and Eleanor once were together (or that Vane at least used to love her).
We see a little of the "high society" side of things with the visit to the plantation.
We also learn how much "trust" Eleanor has in Flint when she pays Gates $1k to secure votes to keep FLint in power.
We learn about the Urca gold, which is a main driving point of the entire series.

Rewatching it now, I'm not sure how I was bored by it or thought it was slow...there was a LOT of shite crammed into the first episode, and even less than halfway through the second one there is still a lot going on. I know the show picks up later in S1, but man this rewatch should be fun because I already am enjoying it a lot more than I did the first time around.

I'll at least try to catch up with the first three episodes over the next couple of nights so I can contribute more to that discussion. But if I can find some good, detailed writeups/recaps of the episodes I can always just refresh myself on what happened and jump in that way.

Yea not a whole lot to add to that except Flint and Billy visiting Elanor's dad, him getting shot, and get to see the Captain of the Royal Navy. Things get real with almost every character pretty quick within two episdes.

I actually get what you're saying about Vane's weird body type now I think it's the dreads that throw him off. It's like his head does not match his body. But he's a bad arse for sure.

Being my first time through, I don't have much to say yet. Looking forward to continuing the watch for sure. Especially with everyone saying how much they love it and that it's going to keep picking up steam.

I noticed last night, it's not just his body either...as soon as his face was on screen it hit me just how weird of a dude he looks.

So far I've done the first 3, just enough to keep up on the homework for the week.

My wife and I started watching this over the weekend. We are on episode 6.

It started off slow, but it's rounding into shape now.

I'd like to throat punch Eleanor. She fricking sucks.

I like Eleanor's.

Let's get some discussion rolling...

I'm struggling to understand Max. So initially she takes part in the orgy for John Silver, and notices the page drop out of his clothes and how worried he is about it. So she takes it and he wakes up and they talk about it and she says she knows someone who would buy it (Rackham)? Then she tries to set up the deal for Rackham/Vane to buy the page with the $5k in pearls, and they're supposed to do this at the Wrecks.. OK, fine so far.

Then when they're appraising the pearls Vane pops in pissed at Max because he heard that her guy (Silver) doesn't have the page, but Flint has it, based on the fight with Singleton on the ship and Billy Bones backing Flint and saying it was the missing page. So Vane assaults her for lying, but she waves of Silver and Rackham sees it and stabs the peephole but finds the room empty. So Vane sort of believes her now and he will go to the Wrecks too. Okay, fine.

But then Eleanor tries to get the schedule from Max and Max tries to get her to leave with her and flee from Nassau. But then they get sort of busted by Flint and crew and Eleanor essentially chooses Flint over Max and makes her tell Flint about the deal at the Wrecks. So now Flint and Billy are going to the Wrecks too. Okay.

At the Wrecks, shite goes way sideways thanks to Vane and Silver is on the run and memorizes/burns the page (which is an absolute brilliant move by him by the way), so now they need him alive to help them find the Urca. Then Max escapes the brothel because she feels betrayed by Eleanor, and we don't see her again for a minute. In E3 we even see Mr. Scott and Eleanor talking about how Max left and Eleanor can't believe she left instead of staying there under her care (which is stupid since she just fricked Max over and betrayed her bigly). Okay.

This is where I get confused...

So after the meeting with Eleanor, Vane/crew, and Flint/crew, Vane shows Rackham a chained up Max and she's been beaten and bruised (and raped I presume). And not long after that, we see that Rackham is taking her to a boat in secret to help her leave, where they are found by Vane's crew and she is taken and raped out in the open. That's when Eleanor hears it (because she just fricked Vane) and goes to save her, only for Max to drop the bomb on her and tell her that this wasn't Vane's fault, but rather her fault.

And then Max basically pledges herself to Vane until her debt is paid for making them lose the $5 Gs worth of black pearls.

So what I don't get is how and why she got into the little closet/hut thing and chained up by Vane. Are we to assume that Max left the tavern and went to Vane? Or that Vane somehow intercepted her trying to leave and kidnapped her/tortured her? If so, for what...more information? She doesn't have the page, so would he be torturing her for who has the missing page? And also if he straight up tortured her why would she "pay her debt" to the man who just did that shite to her? Is she that broken of a person? Did she leave the tavern and then was found by the Ranger crew, and THEY were the ones who had her chained up in there? I just don't connect the dots of her leaving to then being captured and chained up in that hut. That doesn't make much sense to me. When the Ranger crew intercepted Rackham and Max, Hamund says something like "Even though Vane brought her here, we will decide when we're done with her," and he is raping her in the next scene. I'm open to some talks about what potentially happened with Max after she left the tavern.

They show Anne Bonny chilling watching the door to Max's room. She sees her leave and we're just left to assume she's the one who tracks and snags her. That could then help explain Anne's guilt after the fact.

I assume you are correct that Anne had something to do with it. My question is more of why would Vane need to do that at that point? He had all the information available, unless maybe he thought he didn't and could beat it out of Max?

Because she "stole" from him and he has to send a message to the beach.
All in the game yo.

Yeah I think her involvement is enough reason to throw her to the crew. Whether she stole something or not she was in the middle of the crew losing most of their equity. Letting the crew take out their frustrations on her offers a distraction while Jack and Vane can figure out what to do next.

she was the scapegoat for poor decision that vane and jack made. jack went behind everyones back to get the pearls and vane basically signed off on it. vane went off the rails at the wrecks and that ultimately led to jack losing the pearls. easiest way to take the heat off of yourself and your decision for losing all of your crews money is to offer a free use whore to them to use at their disposal.
