Um....I don't thing "reality" is the appropriate word, here.

I would love to see her sing with Josh and I don't think it would be at all awkward. They would gaze lovingly into each other's eyes...

I hate the save. I think it's cheesy in addition to defeating the theory of the show in that America chooses.

I HOPE they get rid of JLo and Stephen. I don't think they will, though. I'd like to see Jimmy as a judge. I don't always agree with him, but I didn't always agree with Simon either. I respected what he had to say, though, more than any other judge. He was candid and didn't sugar coat. You knew he believed whatever he said. I think the judges today say what they do to keep their faves and try to sway the vote the way they want it.

She does not need a supporter here. She's got plenty of supporters in threads on the West Coast. You should support the LA Boy because he's good and you should be loyal to our state guy.

Just read this article a little while ago.

FOX Plans On Retooling "Idol"

quote:

“American Idol,” Fox TV’s aging ratings powerhouse, will undergo a “creative reinvigoration” next season that will determine whether the show’s almost nine- year run as the most-watched series comes to an end.

quote:

“The producers know what happened this year,” Kevin Reilly, Fox’s entertainment president, said yesterday on a conference call, promising a “creative reinvigoration” without providing details of how the show will be retooled. “There’ll be some changes,” he said.
The network is considering rule tweaks that give judges an expanded role, as well as aesthetic changes, such as set designs, according to a person with knowledge of the situation who sought anonymity because the matter is private.

I agree that there are things needed to be done. But this angered me reading that the want to give an "expanded role". That sounds like an absolutely terrible idea. I hate the role that they have now. What do you think this means? I almost think it means more saves which would be awful. I can also see them possibly doing what the voice does towards the end and the judges give point totals to combine with America's votes.
Until I see what this expanded role is, I definitely disagree that a good tweak to the show would be to give judges a more involved part of the process.

quote:

As of last week, the Wednesday-night edition of “Idol” was attracting an average of 8 million viewers in the young- adult demographic this season. Just behind was “The Voice,” the year-old talent show from Comcast Corp. (CMCSA)’s NBC, at 7.9 million younger viewers per night.
Part of the reason for the falloff among younger viewers on “Idol” may be the makeup of the judges, according to Lyle Schwartz, managing director of GroupM, a media-buying arm of London-based WPP Plc (WPP), the world’s largest advertising company.

I am surprised with the fall off in the "younger" viewers. But I don't know if it has to do with the age make up of the judges like they allude to. The age of the judges probably aren't the reason, its probably that people don't think they are good judges. There are some other factors that I believe are in play here. The show has been on for 11 years now. The Brand is kind of tired now. The older themes and songs that many people haven't heard before will not help you with younger demographics and people get aggravated with it. They are still getting high ratings but just aren't holding the younger demographic as strongly.

quote:

Fox and the producers of “Idol,” including CKX Inc. and FremantleMedia North America, have revived the show in the past when audience trends suggested the program’s reign was over. In 2011, ratings rose for the first time in four years.

Idol made a big deal out of totally transforming the judging panel last year. This definitely is the reason for the ratings spike last year. Everyone was interested in how J-Lo and Steven Tyler would do. Now I am sensing a lot of people are annoyed by them as judges.

quote:

“Idol” also saw a renewed focus on music in 2011, with the producers turning to record executive Jimmy Iovine to work with the contestants in a bid to improve the quality of the performances.
“It’s extremely unlikely the show will grow significantly again,” said Todd Gordon, managing director of MagnaGlobal, a media-buying agency at New York-based Interpublic Group of Cos. “But it’s reasonable to expect they’ll find a way to regain some of that younger demographic.”

Jimmy Iovine has been good for the show. Gris, you pointed out that he gives honest opinions and doesn't hold back. That definitely is a good thing. The problem I have had is that I just didn't agree with him about a lot of his opinions especially recently. He does help sway opinions week to week.

The single thing that I have been impressed with the most the last two seasons has been the mentoring sessions with Jimmy and most of the celebrity guests. I have loved watching those mentor sessions because it really looks like they are truly offering sound advice and trying to help as much as possible. It's been fun to hear opinions from some of the singers they have brought in as mentors. I think they help these contestants deliver a good product. I hope this doesn't change at all.

The thing I dislike the most though is the voting on this show. I am admitted power voter from this season because I had to in order to hopefully keep my favorite in. But I think the voting system is broken. You allow for a limit of online votes, thats fine. The call in votes are fine to because you really can only get in a certain amount of calls realistically in a 2 hour window. The text voting is swaying the votes though. Unlimited text voting out numbers the other two voting opportunities by an embarrassing amount. I have read about people personally sending in thousands of votes.
To me, the voting system probably doesn't give you who actually is America's choice all the time. I would be a fan of limits on all voting systems. I highly doubt it would happen though because I think Idol salivates over these inflated voting totals.

I enjoy the show and would love to see them make good changes to help it continue to thrive. It's crazy though, as much as they ratings have fallen, I have been getting more interested each season. This season I was all in though.

I thought this was a good article to share.

I write the long posts for fun. I'm sure they probably aren't read all the way through. I like to discuss this stuff and probably could make them longer if I wanted to.

That article was interesting to me though.

I can see you appreciate the long posts, Hat.

The show should:

1. Keep Jimmy as a mentor or a judge.
2. Keep the celebrity mentors.
3. Get rid of Tommy Hilfiger.
4. Get new judges.
5. Get rid of the save.
6. Stop choosing 12 guys/12 girls for the live shows. Choose the top 24, period.
7. All 24 should get to be on at least 2 shows with no one voted off.
8. Get rid of the stupid Ford videos.
9. Judges should not get expanded rolls. They are the problem.
10. Limit the times people can vote. If you have 4 phones, fine, but there should be a limit on everything, online, text, phone calls to 50 per each one. This will piss off AT&T, but tough noogs.
11. No more 2 hour results shows. They stink.
12. Don't wait until the very last second to tell us who is voted off. Leave a few minutes for the person to speak and be spoken with.
13. Don't make the person voted off sing a last darn song. That's useless. They're usually crying or hugging people and can't sing it well, anyway.
14. Follow all of my suggestions.

Sorry, this is too long for you, hat, but if you read a few, chime in.

Agreed. But thinking about it, I think keeping Jimmy in his role as mentor/consultant would be better than making him a full time judge. I love the mentoring sessions they show with him.

quote:

2. Keep the celebrity mentors.

Absolutely. My favorites this year were Gwen Stefani and Mary J. Blige. They were awesome mentors it seemed.

quote:

3. Get rid of Tommy Hilfiger.

Can't be said enough. His fashion sense was awful. I truly hope the stuff that Colton came out in was his choice and his choice only because if not, Hilfiger should be fired on the spot.
Oh and that out fit he made Hollie wear during Billy Joel week when she sang "Honesty" was her worst out fit on the show. (I still think she looked cute though )

quote:

5. Get rid of the save.

Would be great but I don't think it will happen from what I interpret from that article. They also will love the save now because of Bebe. They will claim that it "worked". Even though in actuality, it ruins what the show is all about. Best singers determined by America's votes. You shouldn't get a do over.

quote:

6. Stop choosing 12 guys/12 girls for the live shows. Choose the top 24, period.

Great point. Fully agree and would like to add that to my list of suggestions. These shows need to choose the BEST talent overall. No quotas on either side. I wish all singing shows would do this. Nice suggestion Gris.

quote:

7. All 24 should get to be on at least 2 shows with no one voted off.

I would like that too.

quote:

8. Get rid of the stupid Ford videos.

No one hates those more than me. No one. They are terrible. TERRIBLE. I wonder if Joshua and Bebe shot one with just the two of them since Phil just doesn't do them now regardless

quote:

9. Judges should not get expanded rolls. They are the problem.

quote:

10. Limit the times people can vote. If you have 4 phones, fine, but there should be a limit on everything, online, text, phone calls to 50 per each one. This will piss off AT&T, but tough noogs.

This is the only way to ensure a fair winner and a fair chance for all. We can talk about the judges (who I hate) all we want. But the flawed voting system is the worst part imo. To me it brings questions to the "credibility" of the overall winner and who America actually thinks wins.

quote:

1. No more 2 hour results shows. They stink.

The results shows have all been one hour this year so far. We don't get a two hour result show until the finale. If they even do one. but there is too much going on during results shows already.

quote:

12. Don't wait until the very last second to tell us who is voted off. Leave a few minutes for the person to speak and be spoken with.

100% agree. That has been a huge pet peeve of mine. Seacrest gives the results, starts the exit video, barely gives them a chance to process in their minds what happened and makes them sing.

quote:

3. Don't make the person voted off sing a last darn song. That's useless. They're usually crying or hugging people and can't sing it well, anyway.

I don't mind it really. If it wasn't as rushed at the end. I think it would be nice.
Hollie's voted off performance last week was greatest of all time on the show. Total fact

quote:

14. Follow all of my suggestions.

Decent list. I agree with you about most of this. You and I share a lot of opinions when it comes to this stuff. But there are some important opinions that you are absolutely wrong about. ( )

This is a depressing Wednesday for me. I have been so excited for Wednesday's the last few months.

I'll watch. But I am still mad and sad.
On a positive note, I guess that means I can watch this week's without needing medication, right Gris?

She will be back on the finale episode and on tour.

Then go on to be a top 5 selling American Idol alum.

ETA: Ford videos and Bebe Sanchez both need to leave with the quickness.

Bee, for some reason, I thought the first few results shows were longer than 1 hour. They had a lot of contestants to go through back then. Maybe they used seemed longer.

You are right. I forgot that The top 25 show that cut the group to the top 13 was a 2 hour results show. That is the only one I remember being 2 hours. Im sure the finale next week will be a two hour results show.
