The creator Bill Lawrence got everyone together in the cast because if they were to do a last season that he wanted to bring back the creativity to how it was the first four seasons (like the episodes with Brendan Fraser) they want to get back to that kind of drama/comedy.

Yeah he retired from the hospital it was a awesome episode he thanked ted at the end which was sweet. But they said he will be in pretty much 80 percent of the season. Courtney Cox will be the new hospital director for the first 3 episodes.
