"It just slipped to next year, that's all," McGregor says of the delay. "The scripts are really good. I think that so now that Episode IX came out and everyone at Lucasfilm's got more time to look to spend on the writing, they felt like they wanted more time to write the episodes. I read about 80-90 percent of what they've written so far and it's really, really good. And instead of shooting this August, they just want to start shooting in January, that's all. It's nothing more dramatic than that. It often happens in projects, they just wanted to push it to next year."

Disney+ just launched, and for better or worse it was marketed as a Netflix/Prime alternative. Star Wars and the MCU are premium young adult action properties, not just kiddie fare.
The Mandalorian as an exclusive made Disney+ a relevant option.
We have MCU in the pipeline, but I have to think they'd planned/hoped to have more Star Wars in place, ready to roll.
Waiting a year means everything is cold.
On another note, I wish they'd stick to one part of the timeline. Just better continuity across shows, can have crossover, etc. Cassian Andor is a mistake because you already know he's dead before the Mandalorian begins, so they could never meet up (in Mando, I guess it could go backwards in the other show). Ewen McGregor is great as younger Obi-Wan, but he's too youthful for either of those characters.

Translation: Kathleen Kennedy is being put out to pasture, and then we're back on

divided the Star Wars fan base
A bunch of bloggists keep saying this, but I don't buy it. The vast majority of the fan base seems to haveunified around Disney Star Wars sucking. It might be a 93 to 7 split, but if I am off it is that the 93 is too low.

The sad thing about this is that they have a director who can pull this off attached to the project.
Chow gets Star Wars and she can bring an Obi Wan series to the finish line. No, I'm not saying she's the next Alfred Hitchcock. But she can keep a show like this on the tracks.
Kennedy is meddling in something she shouldn't. She was fairly hands off for the first season of the Mandalorian by all accounts and look what that got Disney.
Favreau trusted Chow enough he gave her the 3rd and 7th episodes of an 8 season show. The 3rd upped the stakes. The 7th set the table. I trust Favreau's judgement a hell of a lot more than I trust Kennedy's.
