Just a scapegoat.

Start Wars: Galaxy's Edge was the most ambitious project ever undertaken by Walt Disney Imagineering. The new land created an entirely new planet in the Star Wars universe so that guests could live out there own Star Wars adventure. Various people involved in the project on both the Disney and Lucasfilm sides had previously talked about the fact that creating a known Star Wars location in the parks, had been considered, but now we know that Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge was very nearly made to be Tatooine, and we know why that plan was changed.
quote:
Nearly everything about Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World was different during the initial design phase. Former Walt Disney World VP Dan Cockerell appeared on WDW Radio and discussed the fact that, rather than being part of an expansion to the park, originally, the new Star Wars land was going to take over the part of the park called Echo Lake, meaning the land would have replaced existing attractions like the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular. In addition, familiar places from Luke Skywalker's home would have been part of the land. According to Cockerell...
quote:
These ideas were worked on for two years and then, everything took a major turn. Dan Cockerell says that the shift to something entirely new for the land came from Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy following a meeting with Bob Iger. Cockerell goes on...
quote:
"They said, ‘Well, yesterday Bob Iger met with Kathleen Kennedy’, who as a lot people may know was sort of George Lucas’ protege and headed up Lucasfilm. And they had a conversation. They had a meeting. And Kathleen Kennedy, her point of view was, there are way more Disney Star Wars stories ahead of us than behind us. So we really should think about do we want to build a Tatooine, and build what all the fifty-somethings remember Star Wars is or do we want to build something else which is going to appeal to all the upcoming generations who are going to know the new stories. And that day Tatooine was killed at the Studios. And all of those concepts were put on a shelf and I’m sure they are sitting in a vault, and I’m sure they’re going be shown someday about what that land looked like and what the attractions were going to be."
In summary, Kathleen decided HER star wars would be the crown jewel of the star wars universe going forward.
Then it had awful attendance and of course fired the director. frick Kathleen Kennedy.
They didnt even add anything new, in fact the Disney stories are incredibly soulless and uninteresting, but hey theres women in the lead! Kathleen's biggest accomplishment. Shoehorning women awkwardly into every possible role.

He straight up called it rumor, so even he's not calling anyone to 'believe ' it, just telling us what he's heard.
And he's been spot on before, so unless you've got something specific he's been wrong about, please, do tell.
* Lucas isn't getting 100% involved in anything at this stage of his life, other than a tall drink under an umbrella. I can see him being a top consultant, and adding his 2 cents, ( plus getting some royalties ) but Favreau or some one like him will be the one in the chair , should KK exit.

Let's rephrase that:
Build an iconic location from a beloved and timeless classic?
Nope, we're going to make something totally up, with zero connection to the core of the franchise, slap a SW logo on it, and we're good to go.
I'd love to see a Star Wars World with sets from the OT. You could wander around Tatooine, catch some food at the Cantina, watch a show at Jabba's. Wander through a portal (set up as Millennium Falcon in hyperspace) and go to Hoth, wander around the Rebel base, go outside (with a speaker playing Han's voice saying "I'll see you in HELL" at the gate and see Walkers coming in.
Take the Millennium Falcon again, to Bespin, cloud city awesomeness.
Basically, about 5-6 sets, of iconic OT locations, with the Falcon being the gateway through each.
You can have Chewie visible and growling in the cockpit, next to some dude with Han Hair and a black vest/white shirt outfit that you only see from behind, for each Falcon ride. R2 beeping and Threepio whining in the cabin.
You tangle with Tie Fighters, see Imperial Star Destroyers, go through an asteroid field, and even see a Death Star, etc, as you progress. A growl, beep-beep and a "Yee Haw", then off to Hyperspace.
Then in a minute or so, the main ramp drops and you disembark to the next set.
I'd SO be signed up for that. I'd go bankrupt going back so much.
frick it, upon further consideration, one of the early "locations" needs to be the Death Star itself. Your ride on the Falcon gets "caught in a tractor beam", you lower into "smuggling bins", and unload on the Death Star in a hanger. Do a brief but impressive tour of the place, down to the prison section, out through an area overlooking the trash compactor with monster, "the tractor beam gets disabled" and you board up on the Falcon again. Epic Tie Fighter battle, hyperspace off to Yavin, catch the briefing on the assault on the Death Star, watch the fighters take off. Load back up on the Falcon, see the dogfights going on, ride in with Han and Chewie as they clear the way for Luke's run.
Man... I want to do this.

They should use Lucas much like Filoni and Favreau used him during the production of the Mandalorian... an advisor that you run a few ideas past. Pay him to be a consultant and a public face for LF but let someone else run the show.
Agreed.
Lucas's role needs to be a consultative one. Anything more is flirting with disaster at this point. He's a pretty good idea and story arc guy, but the line would need to be drawn there.
Wondering if the first order of business for whoever takes over LF isn't some sort of goodwill mea culpa tour with Lucas to get the OG fans back onboard who were thoroughly alienated and quasi-vilified by KK.

Did you not see Eps 1-3?
You know the new trilogy is a mess when people now thing Lucas returning is a good thing. The prequels were hated garbage until TLJ arrived.

I abhor KK but I agree with her to some degree. Capturing the next generation was a priority that they failed miserably at

For a theme park, you go with the classic. If I'm going to drop a couple thousand to actually walk around and experience something, I don't want sequel, prequel, extended universe, etc. That's fine as an extra... but I WANT the originals.
"Appeals to 50 year olds"... this isn't a movie ticket. Who do they think has the money?

Who do you think drives the theme park attendance?
They may have the money but the only reason the majority of people 50+ Years of age go to Orlando is to go with a younger generation.

Disney’s Avatar ride was built on an established world, not a concept.

1 movie = “an established world” ?
Here I thought it was based on a movie. I guarantee you that James Cameron isn’t basing the script for the next avatar movies beholden to any animal kingdom/avatar park ride.

If you are trying to sell me Star Wars™, then I want actual Star Wars stuff. Not add-ons or what-ifs. It's really a simple and easy concept, they never should have overthunk it.
It doesn't matter if it's "old", it's futuristic stuff with a very distinct look. Nothing is outdated, or likely to be reality for at least a century. There's no reason to move away from it.

Ummm the conversation was about a Disney ride (Star Wars specifically) and it based on movie or concept from Kennedy. The Avatar ride at Disney is based off of the established world created in one movie. It is not based off of a concept of someone’s future vision. Did I really have to spell that out for you?

Cool. Not totally opposed to this since there's no established universe to frick up.

She felt intimated by Luke, Han an Obi Wan. She didn't have confidence to move forward w/ out first erasing the legacies of those who came before, which is a sign of a really weak and petty individual.

I agree. Erasing the older movies is just a terrible idea. They could have done a whole park and added on as they went
