Why would I be sympathetic towards Dexter?

Yeah, the show goes out of its way to establish Dexter more as a tragic hero whose virtue arises merely as the result of a coincidental byproduct of his actions.

Not a movie, but Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson) on Damages. Feel sorry for him everytime he's on the show.

I wanted that movie to end after 10 minutes. Didn't matter to me if he finished his mission or not

Ben Wade stabbed a guy(albeit a douche) in the face for whistling a song, then threw the Pinkerton off the cliff for taking a jab at his momma.

Just sayin.

Both of Ed Harris' characters mentioned are good one's in my book but i dont think they count as true villians. Gen. Hummel wasn't evil til the end and eventually tried to help nick cage. Also his character sacrifices himself in National treasure too. I think the true 'sumpathetic Villian' is Gerrard butler from Law Abiding Citizen. He remained true to his convictions until the very end despite all the death he caused. By the end of the movie I almost didn't want him to die but knew the movie would need closure (sorry for spoilers).

How about the Romulan leader/captain from the new Star Trek played by Eric Bana?

Not sure if i would call it sympathetic, but i sure as hell was pulling for GERARD BUTER in LAW ABIDING CITIZEN, which is definitely one of the best movies ive seen in a while

...and while we're on the subject, if you are a fan of japanese movies, often they establish a villian early on and then by halfway through teh movie, they're not the 'villian' at all anymore.

see "nausicaa" and "princess mononoke" (anime).

that's one of the things i LOVE about japanese films..its not a cut-and-dry good guy vs. bad guy and circumstances could change their point of view. american movies..not so much.
