EXCLUSIVE: This is a pivotal moment for Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s Intrepid Pictures, which the duo launched in 2004. After six years creating and producing for Netflix, including the last four under an overall deal, the duo behind The Haunting TV franchise and Midnight Mass are moving to Amazon Studios. Additionally, they are taking on their most ambitious project to date: a screen adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, which creator Flanagan envisions as a TV series to run for five seasons, followed by two stand-alone features.

In an interview with Deadline, Flanagan and Macy, known for their extensive film and TV work in the horror genre, break the news that they have acquired the rights to the mammoth book series, which draws from multiple genres including dark fantasy, science fantasy, horror and Western. Flanagan reveals that he has written a pilot script and season outlines for The Dark Tower, which he has described for years as his dream project. He has even shared in interviews his vision for the opening shot, a black screen with the words “The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed,” leading to a landscape with a silhouette in the distance.

Flanagan and Macy, who carved the rights to The Dark Tower out of their Netflix and Amazon Studios overall deals, are taking on the famous property having previously done two feature adaptations of King novels, 2019’s Doctor Sleep and 2017 Gerald’s Game (based on The Shining and Gerald’s Game, respectively), both directed and written/co-written by Flanagan.

Should've always been a series. Trying to make one film was stupid

100%.

It has to be a series.

And with Flanagan on board its gonna be done right.

This is a perfect marriage.

The Dark Tower is a series that could appeal to the masses if done well, just like GoT, The Witcher, etc.

Flanagan is literally the perfect guy to make this a reality. His prior King adaptations, both difficult ones to translate to the screen, were fantastic. Not to mention his Netflix work. I have complete faith that he’ll nail this if Amazon lets him do his thing without meddling.

Not optimistic even though I like their past work. I don't think they have the stones to go against the woke crowd and have Detta Walker in the series as she is portrayed in the book.

5 whole years before they announce a re-do. Hollywood is nothing but spectacular in their restraint.

Detta is a key component to the overall story so if they remove it or tone it down to appease the woke crowd then I am out.

I love Idris Elba but the second he was cast is was clear they were not making King's Dark Tower when that adaptation came out.

Seeing some people on Twitter mentioning Timothy Olyphant. I think he has the look for it

We can scratch Idris Elba off the list.

Daniel Craig has what I imagine are Bombardier's Blue Eyes, but he may be a tad too old for the role.

Didn't King kind of base him on Eastwood? Not sure who fits that mold. Olyphant is an obvious choice, but I never felt he had that kind of gravity...which was the thing Elba had going for him.

How old would the cutoff be on Roland? It was hard to tell in the books. I like Karl Urban and Benthal's intensity. Benicio del Toro is a bit up there in age, but his performance in Sicario was a bit similar to how I pictured The Gunslinger, if not Clint. I'm not up on many of the younger actors, but most are too babyfaced that I know of.

To attract casuals to the weirdness of the series you need some big names attached, none more so than Roland.

It’s gotta be someone that play a grizzled stoic badass type but with some comedy chops. 40s or 50s y/o at least.

Maybe Josh Brolin or Hugh Jackman

Yes, King totally based him on the man with no name. Benicio is interesting, but i think his costar from Sicario, Josh Brolin, would be better. Liv Schreiber, Gerard Butler, Michael Shannon, or Henry Cavill could also work.

Good options.

I'll throw out a couple of others:

The guy that plays young John Dutton, Josh Lucas

His costar in Top Gun Maverick, Lewis Pullman:

Is Stephen King going to play himself in the later seasons?

How does he incorporate Wizard and Glass? A flashback season would be jarring for causal viewers.

Can he please fix the fates of the Man in Black and the Crimson King?
