Marvel Secret Wars/Marvel Universe Reset

Someone help me out here. I've recently started collecting comics (Star Wars only thus far) and would like to collect some other lines of my favorite characters (x-men, daredevil, Spider-Man, etc.).
My question is where do I start? I've read the marvel universe is slated to "reset" at the end of secret wars. Does this mean character issues will start back at #1? I know there are digital services to catch up, but I'm more interested in the collection/hobby aspect of comics. I'd like to start fresh with #1's as to not have to track down hundreds of back issues (did this with Star Wars).
Any advice or help would be much appreciated!

Marvel NOW! line up-in particular Avengers(the official team) and New Avengers(Illuminati) by Jonathan Hickman.
For more backstory on how the plot, Hickmans F4 run and Ultimate F4 run can help.

From what I understand, yes, Secret Wars will be a story arc setting up the reset.
What Star Wars comics are you collecting? The new Marvel ones or the old Dark Horse?

Old and new. Almost have them all. Got all of the omnibus books and collected the issues not in omnibus collections. I've been buying the new ones as they come out as well.

Awesome! One of my favorite stories is Crimson Empire. If you haven't snagged those I suggest you do. I've only read the first one and read the synopsis of the last two, but it involves one of the Crimson Guards of The Emperor. The first one tells some of the origins of where those guys some from.
I also suggest any of the Tales of the Jedi. Especially, Dark Lord of the Sith, which explains the rule of two and how it came to be. It also shows how mystical the Force really is and that it's not the only thing out there that can give people power.
(Not that any of that stuff matters now, but those comics are still good reads.)

Haven't read any yet but I'll get to it one day. My reading backlog is ridiculous. Still trying to read what I have left of the EU novels before I have to forget it all exist.

As far as XMen goes, you can try starting on the original team, but I found the writing to be a bit stiff for my tastes.
A good option is to start with Giant-Size X-Men #1
then pick up X-Men #94
Follow the Claremont years all the way through to issue #279 (you could probably stop just before the Muir Island saga though). This will give you a very solid XMen foundation (and the more of the BEST XMen stories).

This is a good time to jump in. Read the Secret Wars for the reset and then just decide what characters you like. Then, start collecting their book if we're doing a true reset.
As for the History, I think the question is: what characters do you like? It's a huge universe, and you're just not going to catch up to everything. Marvel Unlimited is great for back issues as you can read online pretty much everything for one flat fee (but it doesn't include more recent issues).
To play catch up on the universe, I know this will rile a lot of Marvel purists off because its "whats wrong with Marvel" (and the criticism isn't wrong), but... read the crossover events. It's a great starting point:
*Avengers Disassembled
Secret War
*House of M
*Civil War
Illuminati
Secret Invasion
Dark Reign
*Siege
Dark Avengers/X-Men:Utopia
Fear Itself
Avengers v. X-Men
(whew)
(the starred ones are the abbreviated list of must reads)
But the best thing is, once you find a character you like, read their book. Find a writer you like? Read their stuff, whatever it is. There's a lot of stuff on the edge of continuity which is great (Moon Knight, Hawkeye, She-Hulk. Ms. Marvel). So there's no reason to be obsessed with the Big Events if you don't wanna.
If you like the X-Men... boy, are you in for some difficulties. I love Claremont, but you know what? I'm not gonna send someone 30 years in the past. Read the Grant Morrison run (New X-Men), follow it up with Whedon's Astonishing X-Men, and then read Carey's X-Men: Legacy.
Oh, and here's a good resource:

108-143 - Claremont/Byrne years are my personal favorite X-men books.

This is very good advice.
Another thing, go on Craigslist to find someone that is looking to get rid of their comic books for cheap. You can usually find a local person wanting to get rid of say 100 comic books for pennies per book. You also usually get a good mixture of various titles. This way you can read through them, and start collecting around the books you like.
Flea markets are another source for cheap back issues, but I've found that since the super hero movie craze, these sellers have gotten wiser and now know what books to mark up.

Thanks for the advice guys. Mainly looking to collect 4-5 lines of my favorite characters but I've always been scared away at the monumental task of collecting all the back issues. Now that my star wars collection is nearly complete I'm looking to branch out and figured if they were all starting back at #1 it'd be a good starting point. Never even considered Craigslist. But the challenge of the getting the back issues is intriguing.
I've read a few crossover events: Secret wars (original), Civil War, Infinity War.

Marvel Essentials. Cheap, complete, perfect for the person trying to get into comics.
Also: DC Showcases.
And if you're super cheap, you can check them out of the library.

Skip the 1980's Secret Wars. Make sure you get Secret War from the 00s. The original Secret Wars was designed solely to sell toys.

with long running series, there is no "place to start" you just have to dive in. I would pick a set of characters you know - xmen / avengers / etc - and pick up an arc. I am not a big fan of the avengers.
or better yet, pick a character and dive in there. while I am not a big capt america fan, the ed brubaker run would be a great place to start. Its compelling, ties in with some of the marvel movies and would also allow you to explore the civil war and get into other characters.

It'll be worse than that for Xmen fans when...
Spoilers...
after the current Secret Wars, mutants leave Earth for another planet because the terragenesis mist that is now all over the planet, evidently is lethal to mutants.
Conveniently causing the Xmen to have to be separated from the rest of the Marvel Universe.

I don't really like that Marvel is letting the studio properties drive creative in the comics.

Me either but that's how it is now and it won't change anytime soon.
The movies make billions and are making more every year and comics are selling less and less. It makes sense that they would try to do what they can to have the comics ride as much of that movie momentum as possible. It just sucks.
If you're a DC fan, pray that WB shits the bed with Batman vs Superman or they'll do the exact same thing.
ETA:
I'm not saying there aren't good titles out there with the big 2. I'm an older fan and don't mind change at all but the film motivated changes often fall very flat because of their lack of inspiration.

Are there any IOS apps to track a collection? I see a CLZ app but it was mentioned in a review you need some PC software to coincide with it.
