My hope is that the critics either: A) had way too high expectations and the movie just isn't living up to ridiculously high expectations or B) is comparing it to Nolan's Batman trilogy and saying, "it's not as good as the trilogy so it sucks." Or a combination of the two.

i'm no superman fanboy, and i'm not THAT geeked over this movie (although the first trailer may have been one of the better ones i've ever seen), but i think it's a combination of these 2 things. it's really just a comparison to TDK and its high comparison point

I was listening to kid kraddick this morning and one of the chicks on their was saying that one of the biggest criticisms of the movie was that they stripped superman of his personality (cheesiness, sense of humor, etc.). Well no fricking shite. I'm looking forward to it not being like that.

I haven't read any reviews yet fwiw. I want to be open minded about it.

This is all I'm seeing too. Sounds to me like Snyder, Goyer, and Nolan made exactly the movie they wanted to make. Nolan and Goyer were entitled to take a shot after what they did for the Batman franchise.

So people are ripping on this movie cause it's not like the cheesy 70/80's films? Wouldn't you want to go a different route with Superman?

Still looking forward to checking it out, will probably be a weekday afternoon price but still will see it.

I think what were going to see us a huge parity between what critics think and what moviegoers think about it.

Now at 55 on Metacritic. The Best and Worst non-spoiler review are below. Neither are very telling of what to expect but if you read through some of the other reviews their main complaint seems to be that there is no character development and is all action. It sounds like the complete opposite of Watchmen. I think Snyder got ripped for Watchmen so much that he gave in and made a big action popcorn flick.

Best:
quote:

If the word “epic” has lost its meaning in the throes of recent summers, Man of Steel forcefully redefines it.

Worst:
quote:

All its faux-patriotism isn't played for satire, but instead utilized to align the film with an idyllic, unquestioned vision of goodness.

Movie critics are really not my guide for whether or not I will like a film. Most of them have their bias on their sleeve to start with and if a movie doesn't meet his/her views, then it gets ripped apart.

Then watch Batman. Superman isn't a brooding antihero. He's the bright light we should all be moving towards.

When a film is reviewed by a lot of them, 90% of the time I'm in agreement with them as to whether I did or didn't end up liking the movie.

Does not bode so well for this one unfortunately.

Me either. I think the audience percentage on RT is a better indicator if I will like a movie. BUT, 59% and still taking on water is not a good sign.

the critics that I follow mostly are pretty much in line with the consensus

they "liked it" as a summer blockbuster, but it was missing substance.

Normally that wouldn't be a bad thing, but man those first few trailers that came out made it seem like there was going to be a lot of character development which apparently isn't the case

I'll still see it and I'm sure it'll be a fun time
