If I remember correctly, Superman Returns had some pretty high praise going in. I specifically remember seeing a headline in the Bham News that talked about SR's Oscar chances. A cable business show had a roundtable segment on whether or not Superman Returns would actually increase the stock price of Time Warner.

Unless a movie is universally panned, I don't really pay any attention to reviews. That said, Man of Steel is trying to do something with a superhero that has been strip-mined to death. Not everyone is going to love it. Anything with Superman now runs a high risk of not living up to the expectations. My fear about MoS has always been that it'll be more of a response to the lack of action in Superman Returns than a story with real depth.

I'm predicting MoS is going to be a total crowd-pleaser. But I understand why the critics might not like it because, let's be honest, based on the trailers, the movie looks to be about 80% action.

There is a staunch base of nerds that, believe it or not, hate the Nolan films. Like Devin Faraci. They think the Nolan films are dour, have horribly underdeveloped female characters, and are dark just to be dark.

They are idiots who would never be pleased.

So people must like Batman Begins. I love this argument.

And I like Batman Begins, just saying that is a terrible approach, because some of those things are spot on. It depends on HOW you approach the film.

Same with MoS, someone is referring to it as the "Superman movie we've always wanted to see." Not taking anything away from this version, because it does look fricking fantastic, but Superman (1979) is just the perfect Superman film, reflective of its time and character.

There are critics here and there who suck but on the whole they are usually right. 70% is a pretty good number actually.

Yeah, I think people have been spoiled by Nolan's Batman movies. 70% fresh for a movie that's trying to cater to such a broad audience is pretty good.

That's different things to a few different people. Some people want to see a Superman movie that has the depth and plot of something like TDK. Others want to see a Superman movie where he's unleashed, finally does battle with an enemy that can match him physically, and we get to see all of the action that entails.

IMO, they could be going with MoS being action filled and whatever sequel will involve Luthor challenging Superman in a different way. It looks like there's a lot of destruction of Metropolis in MoS. Luthor could be the enemy that rises out of that.

Read:

dark just to be dark.

Superman wasn't some shallow film, even in 1979, the movie was supremely about choice and responsibility. This is why the Nolan critique is spot on because many people equate "depth" to mean "dark," and that Nolan's films are SO vastly complex because they are dark and dour. That's the issue.

That we must destroy the ideal of Superman to make him mean something. (Also why there are VALID criticisms about Nolan's films).

Sure different people want to see Superman films, told from different perspectives about different versions, fair enough, but the admission to that is that some form (read:Superman's defining iteration) is somehow shallow.

And this is coming from someone who actually doesn't like that version, or the classic version of Superman all that much. But there is something unique about the character, always has been.

C'mon man, it was a good popcorn kid friendly action flick, but the dialogue was downright awful and the plot was worse.

I was gonna respond with "I like Avengers more than the Batman movies too" but decided to back away slowly.
