Hopkins was good but Mikkelsen just takes it to another level.

It's kind of an unfair comparison since Hopkins' Hannibal has such little screen time, and it was a movie part written for scene-chewing; there is actual meaty arc to the character that spans three seasons. That said, there's a subtlety, humanity and nuance to Mads' Hannibal that few other actors could have pulled off -- he's the definitive on-screen Hannibal.

Agreed. He knocks it out of the park.
I never got past the 2nd episode of the season though. Not his fault, just seemed liked they were trying to hard to be "artsy"

I agree. And Mikkelsen is definitely the closest to what the character is like in the Thomas Harris books.
