As several of you noted in the comments this morning, in that scene with Ken in the premiere, Bob said his father was dead; here, he tells Pete that the nurse recently brought his father back to health. In the light of the morning, I think Bob Benson: Sociopath is winning again as the theory.

I think at this point they've just focused on him a little too much for him to be just that.

I'd love to think he's someone investigating Don. In reality he may very well be someone who is like Don (not who he says he is/trying to make himself over) but not polished enough to lie as well as Don has.

Am I the only one that thinks Mad Men is losing its steam? I realize it's a drama, but I miss the old days...less dramatic Don flashbacks and more crazy Betty...

Yes that was stupid. I was nine and loved Planet of the Apes. Never once thought it was even remotely scary.

Certainly an episode like Sunday will give a sense of nostalgia for the Betty years, but Mad Men is a character story. The work, the women in Draper's life, they don't really matter. This is a story of decay, much like NYC of the late 60s. It's going to end on a down note, much like The Sopranos. I'm not saying Draper is going to die, but Don Draper of 1960 should be barely recognizable to Draper of 1969-70.

So yes, watching the decline is kind of depressing, but as seen in Draper, only the beginning is good.

Just watched this episode. In my opinion there have been more redeeming moments for Don this season than any of the others. Don doing Father Abraham this episode was one of Don's best moments in the entire series, IMO. He's beginning to see the things that matter (his kids), and the affairs don't mean as much (he said so himself this episode). Hopefully it won't be too late to redeem himself or you will be right about his demise at the end of the series.

Did anyone else pick up on all the things that were kind of repeated or brought back from past episodes for this one?

Skinny Betty
Ugly Peggy
Don/Betty screwing
Betty getting hit on while her husband is out of the room doing business
Joan rejecting Roger while making time with a younger man
Peggy's inappropraite hand touching

I'm sure there were others, but those are all things we've seen before. Some more obvious than others.

Also, did anyone pick up on Megan's Sharon Tate vibe? I read an article about it. I wouldn't have noticed. But the Tshirt she wears on the balcony is from a Sharon Tate photoshoot. The blond wig. Apparently that wasn't by accident.

What was with all the sirens? Esp during the scenes in Dons apt.

There was a lot of reference to threats of violence (not to mention actual stabbing).

Showing the decay of the city I suppose.

The actress lady should not have walked there, etc. Surprised she wasnt attacked.

Exactly, it doesn't seem like they're signaling the end of Don but a resurgence or rebirth. Pete on the other hand is now in total free fall. His personal life is in shambles and he's even thinking of leaving the agency.

Draper has gone through a rebirth several times though. After the divorce-Season 4 where he goes from super drunk to Draper with his shite together-right before he marries Megan. He also went reverted to Man-Whore Don by the end of last year, when he gave his happiness speech.

Don has a cycle of this, because the theme of Dick Whittman's arc is the people never really change.

I think it was more a sign of the times and the turbulence in NY during that period. The sirens during Megan's conversation with Don, essentially drowning out anything useful she had to say also served a purpose in showing us how she's slipping into that just his married piece of arse role.

I thought it was Peggy zooming by on her way to the E.R. with her just announced Ex.

There were also loud sirens in an earlier scene inside the apt. Seemed like just ambient background noise at the time, but after seeing the rest of the episode, it was clearly making some kind of point.

This could well be true, but it also smacks of realism. If you've ever lived in Manhattan, there could be sirens at any given time, any time of day or night.

I didn't even think about that.

I think at the very least it was a subliminal warning that we're reaching emergency levels for some of our characters.
