I'm doing my annual rewatch of the extended cuts now. Middle Earth might actually be more dangerous than New Orleans East.
I can't really think of anyone who deserved more screen time but I agree with everyone that the Frodo/Sam Aggie scenes with Gollum are very annoying and drag on for too long.

Not sure to be honest but probably due to time constraints as he wanted to keep on the one ring. The book ended added another layer in a way that extended past the one ring.
