I was just thinking about something else. Friendly told Michael that the island won't let you die if it still needs you. So maybe Locke could have killed himself. I'm not sure that applies to Locke, as Elie said to Jack after Locke's death that Locke was going as a substitute. So either Ben was working with Elie on this, or he had his own reasons for killing Locke.
Maybe that's what the island wanted, but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me because why would Jacob want that. That's what FLocke wanted, when he convinced Richard to give actual Locke his compass and tell him that he needed to bring the 6 back and that he would have to die.
Somebody help me out here, just thinking aloud.
