But he did screw with them, just not while they were on the beach.

They probably would have scattered and gone somewhere else to camp if the Monster entered the camp in smoke form. Also the Monster did have some knowledge of the future since he met Locke before the statue was destroyed. Why would he risk blowing everything just to have a fun time by killing a few more people? You're overthinking this.

Probably underthinking it actually. I'm not saying that this has any meaning or that the writers will even come back to it. I'm just stating that early in the series there was something keeping him off the beach. Perhaps they changed directions, but there was something to it. Your argument that he didn't want to scare them off by showing up in smoke form makes no sense. If that's the case, why did he show himself in the jungle? Why would he give a crap if they moved their camp?

Again, I'm not saying it means anything at all, but to argue that there wasn't originally something that prevented him from coming on the beach is just arguing for argument's sake. It was obvious if you watch the first few episodes that the Losties were safe from the monster on the beach but not in the jungle.

I honestly believe that the reason he didn't go on the beach in smokie form was to increase the suspense level of the show. If it turns out that he couldn't for some other reason that we actually find out about, I'll be shocked.

He scanned Locke's mind in the past to where he knew very much about what would happen. So he wouldn't screw with anything that happened in the original timeline. This is supported by MIB's quote when he said "Sooner than you think."

But I am not sure if they knew exactly what the Monster was early on. The LOST Bible wasn't written until after episode 10, to where it is quite possible they didn't know what the Monster was, although they do claim they knew that "Light and Dark" would be personified by 2 specific people since the beginning.

I generally don't delve other than to read this thread after I've watched my DVR'd episode when I get off work at 2am or so. I was hoping to find a screen cap (if one exists) of what the guy could see outside of the ship (i.e. - the "Devil Guardian).

I started reading more after this comment but the theories were just running too rampant for me to continue. Anyway, I am pretty sure they showed it, the statue, aka, "El Diablo." Which also makes me wonder why Jacob would live in a statue of the devil? But I REFUSE to theorize on this. LoL.

It's not the statue of the devil, it's the statue of the Egyptian fertility goddess, Tawaret.

Good point. Now why does that dude say he sees the devil in the Black Rock and they instantly pan to Tawaret? I guess I failed this one. Not the first time.

It's not a stutue "of the devil". It's an Egyptian god, one represented by a crocodile head. Sobeik(sp) is the crocodile god most referenced Along with tawaret and he's also the god of the Nile if my memory is correct. I tend to agree with most that it will have some significance but at this point it's more of a time stamp to represent that people have been coming to the island for a long time.

Because, as a citizen of the Canary Islands circa 1867, he's probably not use to seeing a 300 foot tall statue with the head of a crocodile.

Nothing really, other than some discussion on a matrix-like ending.

Set v. Horus

Set v. Horus

quote:

Horus was told by his mother, Isis, to protect the people of Egypt from Set, the god of the desert, who had killed his father Osiris.[17][18][19]
Horus had many battles with Seth, not only to avenge his father, but to choose the rightful ruler of Egypt. In these battles, Horus came to be associated with Lower Egypt (where Horus was worshipped), and became its patron.

One scene stated how Horus was on the verge of killing Seth; but his mother (and Seth's sister), Isis, stopped him. Isis injured Horus, but eventually healed him.[20]
By the 19th dynasty, the enmity between Seth and Horus, in which Horus had ripped off one of Seth's testicles, was represented as a separate tale. According to Papyrus Chester-Beatty I, Seth is depicted as trying to prove his dominance by seducing Horus and then having intercourse with him. However, Horus places his hand between his thighs and catches Seth's semen, then subsequently throws it in the river, so that he may not be said to have been inseminated by Seth. Horus then deliberately spreads his own semen on some lettuce, which was Seth's favorite food. After Seth had eaten the lettuce, they went to the gods to try to settle the argument over the rule of Egypt. The gods first listened to Seth's claim of dominance over Horus, and call his semen forth, but it answered from the river, invalidating his claim. Then, the gods listened to Horus' claim of having dominated Seth, and call his semen forth, and it answered from inside Set

But still Set refused to relent, and the other gods were getting tired from over eighty years of fighting and challenges. Horus and Seth challenged each other to a boat race, where they each raced in a boat made of stone. Horus and Seth agreed, and the race started. But Horus had an edge: his boat was made of wood painted to resemble stone, rather than true stone. Seth's boat, being made of heavy stone, sank, but Horus's did not. Horus then won the race, and Seth stepped down and officially gave Horus the throne of Egypt.[20] But after the New Kingdom, Seth still was considered Lord of the desert and its oases.[23]
This myth, along with others, could be seen as an explanation of how the two kingdoms of Egypt (Upper and Lower) came to be united. Horus was seen as the God of Lower Egypt, and Seth as the God of Upper Egypt. In this myth, the respective Upper and Lower deities have a fight, through which Horus is the victor. However, some of Horus (representing Lower Egypt) enters into Seth (Upper Egypt) thus explaining why Lower Egypt is dominant over Upper Egypt. Set's regions were then considered to be of the desert.

They haven't shot it yet? How closely do they shoot an episode to when it airs?

The finale isn't supposed to air for another 2 months. They're in the middle of shooting it right now. It just depends how long they are before. The premiere was shot in August/September.
