Thinking back on this, how did Mance not take the Valarian steel sword for himself?

You're a king that captures a nights watch member. I can suspend disbelief that you let him fight alongside you, but you also just let him keep his invaluable blade?

Stealing an ancestral sword of the Lord Commander of the group that you broke your life long oath to serve may have been a little too gray on the pissing off the old gods meter for Mance to risk
