As plague movies/mini series (and books) go, I always thought this one was well done.

I think that's where Gary Sinese got his first big push as an actor. And Molly Ringwald was still good looking.

Some questions for discussion:

- Would most TD baws initially have been drawn more to Flagg's set-up or Mother Abagail's.

- What the hell was Laura San Gianomo thinking. I mean who picks a demon for their boyfriend.

- Trashcan man kind of got a raw deal. Seems like Got pretty much set him up to bring the nuke to Vegas.

- Is this thing streaming anywhere? Amazon doesn't seem to have it, and I haven't personally checked Netflix but I've read it's not on there either. I'm gonna have to check and see if I got the box DVD set back in the day.

The Stand is a good book but it’s very uneven to me. The first half and the last half are like separate books. Some characters, like Stu, are very different in the second half of the book than the first.

Read the book (as I did most Stephen King books of the day) and really liked it. Vaguely remember watching the miniseries and not being that impressed.

The book did mention my very tiny hometown, so that was a plus.

Mini series was terrible.

Novel was good but needlesly long.

I enjoyed the mini series. They cut out some stuff - like the entire character of The Kid - but I thought the major characters were well played by competent actors, and the story flowed well.

First half where the world descends into chaos as the virus spreads is amazing.

Ending is total shite in classic King fashion.

The mini series is loaded with 90's cameos, but sadly doesn't hold up well. CBS All Access has a remake coming out sometime this year, but I could see that getting delayed a while because of the Coronavirus hysteria.

Was that the "I wish I could piss it" guy? Probably been close to 25 years since I read it.

I don't remember that quote. He was a pretty over the top character - a young thug type guy with kind of an Elvis type fixation. From Shreveport of all places. He traveled with and abused Trashcan man for a bit.

I watched the Miniseries back in 93 and loved it. Haven't seen it since however.

I read the unabridged version of the book. The descent into a land of almost no one else being alive was so incredibly immersive that after putting the book down and walking outside it would feel kind of odd to see other people.

A televised version of anything is almost always not as good as the written version. With that said, the mini-series was about as good as you could hope for (especially being on a broadcast network).

Definitely Mother Abagail's. Flagg's group had too many assholes and psychos for my taste.

TL;DR - Bitches be crazy.

The longer version is that some women are innately drawn to power (whether this is ego, some biological imperative or something else is irrelevant for this level of discussion), even if it's to their own detriment. See also: collaboration horizontale.

When you play with fire often enough you're bound to get burned.

Nary a clue. If Amazon doesn't have it though, that's going to be tough to find.

I read the book in high school and loved it. The miniseries was pretty good, I think I like it better than most seem to.

The opening scenes are great.

I read the book in High School a few years after it was released, and I loved it. I keep saying I should do a re-read as an adult, but I’ve not yet done so.

When the mini-series came out, I was still young-enough to think that it should have been a mirror-image of the book, which it definitely was not. As such, I liked it, but I did not love it. I have never re-watched the mini-series, either.

One thing I remember clearly about the mini-series was that NONE of the roles were cast with an actor that I would have picked for that role. All did a decent job and some did an excellent job, but with every scene I kept thinking “this is not the right actor for this role.”
