Not just my favorite Jimmy Stewart movie...it's my favorite move of all time.

Solid choice. That scene pictured is awesome, with those shots of JW and his shadow lurking in the alleyway, leaning against that wall. Stewart, Wayne and Marvin (thanks tigermyth) trio is tough to beat.

I lived in Pittsburgh for a few months before I realized that Jimmy Stewart's hometown was just an hour drive away. So the next day I made a day trip out of it and went visit his museum. Bought a Harvey blanket as a souvenir. Thats my favorite performance of his.

Went to Indiana?

Yep. Should have specified Indiana, PA is his hometown. Then a year or so later I ended up working with some people that went to IUP. Thought that was kind of funny. CSB.

I had posted about this in the "All Time Greatest Movie Pilot" thread. Besides his many roles as a pilot in films, Stewart was a wartime and post-war pilot, active in the reserves throughout the Vietnam War.

quote:

Commanded a bomber squadron in WWII and piloted B-17's and piloted B-24's in actual bombing missions He was promoted to Brigadier General and flew on bombing missions in Vietnam as an observer. Was presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom and was promoted to Major General of the Retired Ranks by Reagan.

The man was a greater hero in real life than any he played on the screen.

Brig. General James Stewart USAF Reserve

If you flew with him you tended to complete your mission and go home alive.

Excellent actor ...better American

Is this thread for people that are 60+ years old?
James Stewart was drafted in October 1940 into the United States
Army, although he was initially rejected for being underweight.
Work with a trainer allowed him to pass a subsequent physical, and
he enlisted in the USAAC in March 1941.[1] During World War II he
was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses and four Air Medals,
as well as the French Croix de Guerre with bronze palm.

It is under rated, and when Jimmy isn't on screen the movie can drag, but "Mr. Hobbs takes a vacation" is hysterical whenever Stewart is on the screen.

I've seen the movie a half dozen times and I still get a laugh when Jimmy Stewart says "you little creep" to one of his obnoxious grand kids.

Shenandoah and The Rare Breed are two of his better westerns. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is my favorite though, especially with an additional cast of Lee Marvin and John Wayne.

Harvey is underrated. I recently watched The Shop Around the Corner which is a pretty cute RomCom from 1940 that inspired the story for You've Got Mail. Pretty, pretty good.

Bend of the River (1952)
and The Far Country (1954) are to Stewart, what Rio Bravo (1959) and El Dorado (1967) are to John Wayne. Really similar stories. The two Jimmy Stewart movies are about greedy business people taking advantage of Gold Rushes. Both have some beautiful scenery.

You can get both, Night Passage and The Rare Breed, on one DVD from Amazon for $5.19.

The second page is way too late in this thread for Phoenix to get a mention.

Great cast, good performances, but Stewart's performance was so utterly superior.

Btw, the last surviving cast member is Hardy Kruger who played the German whiz kid "airplane designer".

Shenandoah

Parts of that film still choke me up. As a son in a large family and now as a father. Stewart losing his son to that frightened young sentry, and the curse he puts on him. And Boy returning in the end. Kills me.
