Kimmel on Leno: "F--- him!"

Jimmy Kimmel is moving to the same time slot as Leno and Letterman and had that choice, four-letter word to offer Jay when asked about competing with him in that time slot. Clearly Kimmel is still pissed off about the whole Tonight Show debacle from 3 years ago.
Now I'm about to go on a rant and I'm sure I will be in the minority with this opinion because of the high regard a lot of you hold Conan. I will go ahead and say that I have watched Leno in the past but, overall, I've never been the biggest fan of late night comedy.
Everyone calls Jay Leno a backstabber for what happened between him and Conan O'Brien three years ago. Leno stole Conan's show right out from under him. He makes the perfect villain, especially for our age group. Conan owns the 18-35 demographic. But I think we really need to look back through the history of this whole mess to find out who the real villain is. The battle for The Tonight Show didn't begin in 2009, it began in 2004, and it was started by none other than Conan O'Brien.
Conan's ultimate dream was to host The Tonight Show. That's the reason he came to work for NBC in the first place. He wanted that particular gig more than anything. The only problem with that, however, was that Leno occupied that position. Not only did he occupy it, but he was dominating the competition in the ratings. Conan was viewed as the hip up-and-comer and O'Brien bought into this. He felt that it was his time to shine. He began pushing for The Tonight Show gig and did so by threatening to leave the network after his contract expired. NBC didn't want a big name like Conan O'Brien working against them in the same time slot as Jay Leno. So they compromised. Leno would get the boot in 2009 and Conan would take over. Leno announced on his show that he would be "retiring" from The Tonight Show but in reality he had been forced out because Conan O'Brien had the NBC execs' balls in a vise.
The execs figured that, by 2009, Leno will have lost his touch and be down in the ratings. Problem was, by the time 2009 arrived, Leno's ratings were stronger than ever. Instead of retiring like Leno announced that he would, Leno began to look elsewhere for a new gig. ABC really wanted him in the 11:30 time slot. NBC recoiled at the idea because that would put him in direct competition with their beloved Tonight Show. They had already promised the gig to Conan so they couldn't very well back out of that little deal. So, to keep Leno from competing against them, they decided to appease Leno by giving him his own show in prime time.
Leno wanted to leave the network for ABC but ABC would not guarantee Leno that he could bring his whole staff with him. Because of this, and the huge boost in salary NBC offered him, Leno decided to stay on at NBC and take the prime time slot they had offered him.
Meanwhile, Conan O'Brien had taken over The Tonight Show and, after strong first week ratings, began to tank horribly. In the latter half of the summer of 2009, things got so bad for Conan that Letterman reruns were beating out his all new shows in the ratings department. Leno's variety show premiered in prime time that September but quickly tanked after a strong opening night. With Conan failing in late night and Leno failing in prime time, the execs were forced to make a decision. We all know what that decision was but it wasn't the fault of Leno or Conan. Conan O'Brien's departure was the fault of NBC. They should have let Leno leave the network when he wanted to. Because they didn't, Leno was the one who became the villain.
But it all is of no consequence now. Conan is doing alright for himself on TBS and Leno is once again #1 in late night.

Leno;dr
just kidding i did read
While I agree with you in principle that the blame for the Conan situation goes to the network rather than Leno himself, I still think Leno is a pussy for staying at NBC after what they did to him. He let himself be the instrument of Conan's demise. Without him hanging around, NBC would have rallied around Conan and toughed out the bad start. He would have succeeded in the longer run, but now we'll never know.
Leno has been creatively bankrupt for years and I really hate him and his show. It's sad that it still wins the ratings.
I like Kimmel fwiw and hopefully he can be the one to take out the Chin.

Dude. That's show business. Both men wanted the most coveted slot in all of late night TV. You don't get that job by playing nice.

I fricking hate Jay Leno. One of my best friends growing up actually spookily reminds me of him. Jay is the piece of shite friend who will do horrible things to you and will then say he was doing it in your best interests and that he's a truly good guy. He doesn't give a frick about anything other than his reputation and how far he can advance himself. He may be the nicest person in the world to your face, but he is a complete cocksucker and backstabber behind closed doors. But the tragic thing is I think people like Jay truly believe they are the good guys in all these situations and that people that hate them for feeling backstabbed are just bitter over their success. Leno can't stand to be the bad guy and will explain terrible things he does to the utmost extreme, but in the end he doesn't really care. He's a cesspool of a human being and there's a reason why all of Hollywood can't stand him and he has no true friends. He's a backstabber and a snake. No one wants to be friends with that type of person.

I don't confirm or deny whether or not Leno is a back stabber. I'm just arguing that he wasn't a back stabber in the case of the battle between him and Conan in 2009. What happened between them was entirely the fault of NBC and the poor decision they made in 2004.

No, honestly its creepy how much he reminds me of a former friend of mine. I'm not going into details, but a guy I'd formerly describe as one of my best friends backstabbed me to the utmost extreme, and then tried to convince me that he did it because he was my only true friend and that all my other so called "friends" were out to get me and they forced him to be the "bad guy" in this situation. From this and one other big event, he is certainly no longer any of our friends and he no longer has any real friend. And he's the nicest person in the world to your face, but behind closed doors he's the biggest a-hole I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Trust me, everything Leno says is extremely calculated to make him seem like the good guy when he does extremely terrible things. Jimmy Kimmel, David Letterman, Conan O'brien, and Howard Stern know exactly what type of man Jay Leno is. The thing is all 4 of these men are sincere. They may not all be the nicest people, but they are all very sincere people. Jay Leno is one of the least sincere people in show business. Seriously, look at his interviews and can you honesly say that he is friends with any of those people he interviews or is even remotely liked by them? Pretty sure Norm and Will Ferrel are friends with Conan in real life, and Matt Damon and Matthew Mcconaughey are actually friends with Kimmel. It just seems that Jay has no real friends when he's interviewing any of these celebrities. They're all just there to promote shite rather than just have some fun together.

Jeff Zucker to be exact, but that doesn't matter now. It doesn't change that Jay Leno is an insincere dickhead.

He's actually going down in the ratings, which is why Kimmel is going to directly challenge him. Kimmel has been going up 5% viewership every year, while Leno has been going down even more sharply than that. And the only reason he is the current ruler is he plays it safe and does absolutely nothing risky or creative.

I really want to know the background story with your ex backstabbing friend.

Nothing particularly interesting actually. It just involved fricking me out of an apartment complex to where I barely got another at the last moment.

Haven't watched any late night shows in well over 10 years, so I don't have any favorites in this, but I'm sick and tired of all these miserable 'comedians' complaining about Leno. It seems to have turned into a 'bandwagon' type of thing. Letterman hates him, then Stern, then Conan, then Kimmel. Could be a way for these guys to get attention. shite, get over it. They're all millionaires, and frankly, I don't think that any of them are that talented. Letterman was brilliant at NBC when he first started, but now seems to be the most bitter, hateful, unhappy man on the air.

Bill Hicks might've been the first to the "hate Jay Leno" party. Man, he has some evil routines about Leno being a hack. And that was pre-Letterman dispute.
My issue with Leno is that he's an unfunny hack who does hacky material. I don't really care about the mechanizations of the business, but I'm rooting for Jimmy just because I think Jay Leno killed the Tonight Show. It used to be great, and now the show sucks. He killed the brand. Screw him for that.

It was only great because of Johnny Carson. Letterman, Leno, Conan, no one can live up to that legacy.
