Walter Sobchak: Look, Larry. Have you ever heard of Vietnam?
The Dude: Oh, for Christ's sake, Walter...
Walter Sobchak: You're entering a world of pain, son. We know that this is your homework. We know that you stole a car.
The Dude: And the fricking money.
Walter Sobchak: And the fricking money. And, we know that this is your homework.
The Dude: We're going to cut your dick off, Larry.
Walter Sobchak: You're killing your father, Larry!

Coffee Shop Waitress: Excuse me, sir. Could you please keep your voices down? This is a family restaurant.
Walter Sobchak: Oh please, dear? For your information, the Supreme Court has roundly rejected prior restraint.

Watch it again. Honestly most people don't get it the first time since they're too wrapped up in the plot. Its one of those films that absolutely requires a rewatch in order to get what is going on. I was the same way when I first watched it, but now its in my top 5 comedies.

watched it again last night because this thread got me thinking about it. I dont know how anyone couldnt love this movie. Its comedy gold with great actors, wierd/perfect plot, and full of one liners. Just an all around perfect comedy.

This movie can't be overrated because you can't say enough good stuff about it.

John Goodman's performance was legendary.

And that scene with Larry Sellers is one of my favorite film scenes of all time.

Also, sometimes The Dude says stuff in passing that I don't understand at all.
But it's still hilarious.

Like, why does he say, "Lots of in's, lots of out's, lots of 'what have you?'s"

On SportsCenter's top 10, a lot of times Neil Everett, when he it gets to play 8, will drop a "Mark it 8 dude."

Occasionally, on a homerun highlight, they say, "The dude hits...the dude abides!"

Honestly there are 4 roles in the film that you are convinced their respected actors were born to play: Jeff Bridges as The Dude, John Goodman as Walter, Julieanne Moore as Maude, and John Turturro as Jesus. You're lucky if you get 1 or 2 a year, but getting 3-4 in a single film is a hell of an accomplishment.

I think you could throw a few from Pulp Fiction in that catergory as well. Your assesment is right on though.

Ehh, I love Pulp Fiction as much as the next guy, but the only person who I think was absolutely born to play a role in that film was Samuel Jackson. I could see Michael Clark Duncan being a pretty good Marsellus Wallace for instance. John Travolta was good, but I don't think him as an actor was necessarily necessary as the part though. Really though, no one besides Sam Jackson could have played that role as perfectly though.
