The year was 1994 and producers approached the major studios about making a Harriet Tubman biopic. One studio exec suggested the role be given to Julia Roberts, one of the biggest female A-listers at that time. Fortunately, the lone black person in the room pointed out that Tubman was black. Undaunted, the dumb arse studio exec replied, “That was so long ago, no one’s going to know that.”

I'm guessing this is like that "oh my God they want to remake Princess Bride" bullshite. An offhand comment that was never seriously considered, but it makes for a great tabloid clickable headline.

That's crazy....

Scarlett Johanson would have been the much better choice.

Depends on the exec.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that same exec tried to insert a giant mechanical spider into the film.

Jon Peters is definitely dumb enough to make a comment like that.

I think there's a scene in The Player or maybe another Hollywood movie from the 90s where every studio exec is pushing Julia Roberts for every role.

Nah, I would cast Charlize Theron. She is African American after all.

reminds me when of when a producer was trying to sell a movie about navy seals to Ari emmanuel with welsey snipes as the lead. Ari responded, "thats dumb, everyone knows black people cant swim"

I’m thinking older.

Cheech and Chong did this in the early 70s with the Jackson Five movie starring the Allman Brothers and Zorro starring John Wayne.
