Less than two weeks after John Singleton suffered a massive stroke, the trailblazing filmmaker has died in Los Angeles at the age of 51. The director, who made history with 1991's Boyz n the Hood as the youngest person and first African American ever nominated for a best director Oscar, died Monday at Cedars-Sinai Hospital after his family took him off life support.

"This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John's doctors," the family said in a statement released to NPR, adding that he "passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends."

The family of the 51-year-old Boyz n the Hood director and screenwriter confirmed the news on Saturday.

"On Wednesday, April 17th our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital," they said in a statement to E! News. "John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care. We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues."

Singleton had checked into a hospital after experiencing leg pain, sources told Variety. The outlet added that doctors have categorized Singleton's stroke as "mild."

TMZ quoted a family member as saying that Singleton suffered the stroke after taking a flight back to the United States from Costa Rica. The outlet said doctors are performing tests on him and are also doing rehab.

In addition to his work on the 1991 film Boyz n the Hood, his Oscar-nominated debut film, Singleton also directed movies such as Higher Learning and 2 Fast 2 Furious, Michael Jackson's "Remember the Time" music video and episodes of shows like Empire, Billions, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, and Snowfall.

I saw on Yahoo today that he is going to be removed from Life Support...

Director John Singleton will be taken off of life support after suffering a stroke earlier this month, his spokesperson Shannon Barr told USA TODAY Monday. "It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off of life support today," Singleton's family said in a statement via his spokesperson. "This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors."

The family also said in the statement that Singleton "like many African Americans …quietly struggled with hypertension."

Seems like an unnecessary qualifier there.

Blacks have a much higher risk of having high blood pressure. They're also more likely to have it treated, due to health advocates getting the word out that they're at a high risk. As they do with this mention in this article.

My condolences to his family.

Strokes can be weird things, you can have one and it doesn't really impact your life, or it can kill most of your brain in one fell swoop. I feel terrible for his family to have lost him at the age of 51.

Steve McQueen (12 years a slave) is also good. Spike is hit or miss. Also the director of Fruitville and Creed (plus Black Panther).

"My father, you know, just did what he could do to set me straight, and you know, because it's only so far you can go, you know, with your mom. Moms just like will rationalize what she [asks] — but Pops will say, 'No, you do this because I said do this,' you know?" he said in 1991. "And a lot of my friends didn't have that."

What they had instead, Singleton added, was a model rooted in the hopelessness of life in the 'hood.

"It's like: 'My brother went to jail. My daddy went to jail. I know I'm going to go to jail.' You know what I'm saying? That's the mentality," he said. "It's like it's a given. It's like there's no future."

The film earned him Oscar nods for director and screenplay. Singleton was the first African American to be nominated for directing, and at just 24, he was the youngest nominee in that category's history — a record that stands today.
