Really good family movie with a great cast based on a true story. A retired married couple discovers a flaw in the lottery leading them to winning enough with others from their small town to revitalize the town.
Bryan Cranston, Annette Bening, Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute), Larry Wilmore, Michael McKean.

I didn’t understand why he was scared of the kid. He should’ve just turned him in for hacking their database.

I thought it was a decent movie. It's pretty cool that the real people did use their strategy to help their town. I don't know if the Harvard kid part was true or dramatic license...I suspect it is the latter. Anyway, a good movie to watch with the wife on a rainy day.

Yeah I'm a sucker for kind-hearted feel good movies/shows like this. Ted Lasso is another example.
There was a conflict there, but you're right that it was exaggerated for the movie.

The film does take a few small liberties with the real story, shifting the action to the present and amping up the conflict between the Selbees and a group of college students who also discovered the lottery’s loophole.)

Larry Wilmore
Remember when Larry Wilmore ridiculted Otto Wambier for his white privilege when he was tortured to death by North Korea? I do.

quote:I think the Jerry character was so good, that he didn't want to give the kids any reason to damage their own lives. I don't think that he even turned them in to the lottery commission (which he could have). Maybe they were trying to show that he'd give up a ton of money for the town, if it meant keeping things from escalating into serious criminal problems (for anyone).

I liked the movie well enough, even though the tone and performances leaned towards a Hallmark holiday movie. My wife thought it was weak and cheesy (but then we were coming off of seeing Sandler's NBA movie, which had really impressed her a lot).
By the way, Annette Benning looks like an awesome older woman now. If she's had work done on her face, it's minimal. I know they dressed her down and gave her an intentionally horrible hairstyle, but it was nice to see a former movie beauty queen in her mid-60's and looking like a normal, attractive retiree.
