James Gunn Avoids Reshoots by Not Filming ‘Until I Have a Finished Script’ and More: ‘I’ve Done One Day of Reshoots on My Past Two Films Combined’
quote:

When one follower suggested there will also be a significant time spent on reshoots, which have become something of a staple on big Hollywood tentpoles, Gunn replied with a surprising revelation: “I don’t know. I’ve done a total of one day of reshoots on my past two films combined.”
quote:

One follower asked how he manages to reduce the need for reshoots, to which Gunn responded with six tips.

1) “Over-prepare,” Gunn answered.
2) “Don’t start shooting until I have a finished script my whole team is happy with
3) Hire actors and department heads I know can do their jobs
4) Surround myself with people who will challenge me and not just yes-sir everything
5) Ask myself daily – are there any small imperfections in the script or what we’re shooting that might end up feeling like huge imperfections when we cut the film together?
6) 1 and 2 again!”

That’s pretty telling

Retards filming movies before the story is even written

Yeah the hidden lead here is that Superman is finished filming and he doesn't expect reshoots of any significance

Part of me says: Oh sweet summer child, this is WB/DC, they will committee your film to death.

But I'm betting when Gunn decided to head up DCEU, he got a lot of control.

I remember a directors commentary for a rather disliked movie that had a lot of reshoots and even he was like “I had budgeted the cost to do every shot in the movie ahead of time.”

Thing is if you don’t have clout and the dailies start coming out, your kinda don’t have the say a lot of the time

True, but Gunn has earned the clout to be able to do it his way. If DC is smart, they let him do his thing and print money for once

I feel like Marvel started getting their shite together recently because they know Gunn is gonna kill it for DC. Couldn't have done any better with Gotg. He made an excellent trilogy they made a ton of $ off of what was D list characters nobody really knew.

It isn't new, either.

All the way back in 2008, Favreau started filming Iron Man without a finished script. He, RDJ and the Dude would stay up late working on the shooting script for the next day, focusing on dialogue, then they would publish the changes, grab a little sleep and shoot the pages.

That worked out, but that's why these Marvel (and it has bled into other areas of Disney) movies cost so much. They shoot them 2 to 3 times (or more), because Feige is a big improviser. Shoot, fix, shoot again, focus group, reshoots, etc.
