Saw that Netflix has a WWII doc they are promoting

Ken Burns co-produced a miniseries called "The War". Ken Burns always does excellent war documentaries.

It doesn't help you right now, but I'm pretty sure we're close to getting the 3rd "installment" of the Hanks/Spielberg WW2 series with Masters of the Air coming out on Apple TV+

LINK

Hitler's last stand Nazi diehard and fanatics fight to the last man to stop Allied forces from freeing Europe, keeping an unrelenting grip on the naval bases, citadels and fortresses of occupied Europe.

I have two episodes left and have found this very interesting.

It's a slow burn, but The World at War (British television documentary from the mid-70s, when many participants were relatively young, healthy and in command of their faculties) is the best type of product for that war.

It was free on Amazon prime for years, but not sure now. We used it to teach military history and I've seen all of it several times. Let me put it this way, it is as good for that war as Ken Burns' series is for the American Civil War - that's the highest compliment I can pay to a documentary series - compare it to either one of those.

Victory at Sea is fantastic just for the soundtrack (and if you are into the naval part of it)

For feature films, I'm sure you're aware of the companion pieces on Iwo by Clint Eastwood - if not, Flags of our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima make for a great double feature.

Patton remains the finest feature film about the war, with The Longest Day and A Bridge Too Far probably right on its heels.

When Trumpets Fade is a more modern film that has a gritty, modern drama feel about it.

Bridge on the River Kwai is a classic, as well. As a pure character piece, The Caine Mutiny (Herman Wouk JUST died a few weeks/months ago) is up there.

Tora, Tora, Tora is another great film that I can recommend.

Mister Roberts and Kelly's Heroes are lighter fare, but also extremely well done film.

It's famous for the memes, but Downfall is a feature film covering what actually happened in Hitler's bunker those last few days of the war. Extraordinarily well done foreign language film. As is Das Boot.

Look up John Huston's documentaries made during WWII

Like:
The Battle of San Pietro
Report from the Aleutions

Or John Ford's:
The Battle of Midway

Other awesome WWII documentaries:
Thunderbolt
Memphis Belle
Victory at Sea
The World at War

So many to choose from...

If you’re referring to the one they just put up narrated by Derek Jacoby I can confirm it was really good. Watched it all in a day.
