American Splendor. Paul Giamatti nails it as Pekar. If you liked Bernie, you might like this. It’s a similar doc/mockumentory with real people style.

And Wonder Boys.

A great sense of place film, and a fine stoner Michael Douglas role.

"shite remake"? You're a monster, and all your children will monsters.

Edit: Oh, wait. Day of the Dead, not Dawn. Ooops. Yes, that was shite. But it wasn't a remake. Pretty much a completely different movie.

A few more, including a couple lesser-known titles

Pontypool
The Thirteenth Floor
eXistenZ
Mr. Nobody
Last Night (1998)
The Final Girls
Dagon
Delicatessen
Miracle Mile
The Machinist
Europa Report
Wristcutters
Brick (I'm not sure if it's underappreciated or not, but I never seem to hear about it)

Lot of underappreciated horror and sci-fi on my list, it seems.

I rewatched that last Halloween. Just because it was on.

That's still a literally tense movie.

The pacing hasn't grown old.
