Is there a reason that series need to start at the end? Why not just go in order?

The story for House of the Dragon wasn't even written until 2018.

The books Game of Thrones is based upon was written starting in the 1990s through present.

You realize it’s all just made up stories, there is no true “beginning”

Also no matter where you start…you can always tell the story of what happened before. As in how did we get to this point.

So basically you're complaining about prequels, correct?

I imagine it, like most things, is just "it depends".

Sometimes people will put out movies, see how popular they are, and decide prequels would help fans fill in some gaps.

Sometimes they're cash grabs.

Sometimes the creators come up with the stuff WAY later and want to tell those stories then that they didn't have originally.

Sometimes it's all of the above.

Look at the Star Wars prequels; they came out nearly 20 years after the end of the original trilogy (Phantom Menace came out in May of 1999; Return of the Jedi in May of 1983). While there are hints here and there during the original trilogy that there's more to what's going on (references to the Clone Wars, the reveal of Vader's true identity, etc.) it's very likely Lucas had nothing definitive in mind regarding the backstory (hell, Vader being Luke's father was only determined AFTER A New Hope, and Leia being his sister only determined AFTER Empire).

Prequels aren't much different than sequels when they're decided upon AFTER a studio sees how profitable a movie is. Really, that's probably the only difference - prequels are almost universally decided based on profitability AFTER a movie has come out, while sequels can be presumed/in development before you know if the first movie is successful or not.

HOTD is a god tier show especially when weighed against the absolute pile of trash around us for like 5 years straight at this point. It provides an excellent justification for doing prequels by itself. Most times though prequels just like sequels don’t and will never reach the heights and popularity of whatever main component they’re attached to. It’s supplementary by its nature. Take it or leave it.

I kinda hate prequels as a whole even when they’re well done not gonna lie, especially if the material is closely related to that of the original content. Just not my thing.

People at work keep pushing this show but that world is absolutely dead to me at this point until the story I actually cared about is resolved. Since the author has no inclination to do that, I’ve kinda just moved on.
