Is Netflix Hannibal of Carthage movie canceled?

Netflix pauses pre-produciton on hannibal
gonna be disappointed if so. been listening to the Hannibal audiobook on audible (it's only 5 hours long) after listening to the Fall of Civilizations podcast episode on Carthage. It's a great story and would love to see it depicted on the big screen or as a TV series.
Carthage really doesn't get the respect it deserves for it's role in human history. created the first true phonetic alphabet around 1050 BC. Conquered Spain and then brought Rome to it's knees under Hannibals iconic march through the Alps. It would be worthy of a TV series if they don't do the movie.

Yep. This is the audiobook i was listening to. It was free but that may be audible+ members. Does a better job with the tactical breakdown than trying to be entertaining

I love me some Denzel but he's much too old to play Hannibal Barca. He's going to be 72 this year and Hannibal was likely not even 65 when he died.

He really did blow it but shite if carthage wouldve sent the soldiers he requested he woulda took rome before this had a chance to happen. The government didnt provide him the support he needed
Scipio does deserve a lot of credit for those tactics as well

How would the soldiers have reached him? Carthage actually had the same problem Rome did. In that Rome could not defeat Hannibal none of the other Carthaginian could hold up against the rest of Roman generalship.

Yeah in agree. Unless they were gonna do multiple actors playing young hannibal then Denzel playing old hannibal the casting wouldnt work for me

Denzel far too old to play Hannibal.
He was around 30 when he crossed the Alps.
He was more Levantine looking than Denzel to boot having been of Phoenician descent. Would prefer a younger Oscar Isaac type or maybe a Riz Ahmed if you could age him down a bit.

I think Paul Mescal, the lead in Gladiator 2, could probably do a decent job.

Hannibal was a Semitic Phoenician not a sub Saharan African. This is the Cleopatra black washing all over again. If they are going to start with a historical lie, I doubt it would have been good. The cost to make this would also have been prohibitive. Large cavalry and elephants in huge military battles?
