I see this sentiment a lot on here. I'm curious why actors doing accents bother so many people. She sounds pretty similar to the real Anna Sorkin imo. Do unfamiliar accents in general bother you? Or just actors doing accents in movies?
The over affectation of the accent becomes very annoying. One reason I would have a hard time understanding "bankers" being taken by someone exhibiting those traits. Show was alright, got really tired of the portrayed reporter and $62k loser in their roles.

Just watched the 2nd episode. People were paying for her intellectual persona and didn’t know it. So far I can’t fault her for working hard to gain social queen bitch status.

The Billy McFarland and fyre fest shite has me mind blown, wondering if that was real or not

It’s basically Ruth Langmore trying to pull off some odd Euro trash accent; especially when she’s yelling or having a breakdown.
I think of it more like Luanne from King of the Hill, if the King of the Hill took place in Eastern Europe. Once I started thinking of it that way, it became campier and less offputting.

Probably bc this particular accent is annoying to listen to. Most people don't know anyone with a similar accent so it sounds weird and hard to understand. If it's close to the actual person's accent then that's good acting, but people would still hate the real person's accent bc that is an annoying AF accent.

I enjoyed the show, watched it all in 2 days. It was different, and interesting. If the show was realistic I don't see how she was convicted of crime against the banks, since in reality, there was no chance she would get the money.

Whole story could have been told in a 60 minute episode, but they stretched it out to an entire season by pumping it full of fantasy storylines and “white man bad” propaganda.
I watched & enjoyed it. At no point did I think there was anything pushing "white man bad" propaganda.

She lied (to the bank) about being a trust fund kid.

Yeah, that's pretty wild. Apparently she scammed scammers. She also became friends with Martin Shkreli.

For me if the actor isn't an absolute master at it, as well as the other actors, it takes me out of the movie. I was watching Mississippi Burning the other day and I thought Alec Baldwin could have portrayed his character just fine without the accent. It's in Mississippi we get it, there's no reason to sound like Michael Scott in the Savannah murder mystery episode just to prove it

I had the same problems as others did with the accent.
I like Julia Garner, but IMO she’s getting a bit of a pass for that accent. It may sound like the real Anna which is difficult anyway since she’s from Germany and Russian by birth, but at several points in the series there was a whack-a-mole aspect to it where she was dropping in and out of both American and British dialects.

There’s a lot of bloat throughout but the last two episodes should have just been left out altogether. They add absolutely nothing.
They spent way too much time on the journalist and the attorney caring for Anna because she had no one else. Nevermind the fact that she was a sociopathic con artist. As someone in desperate need of a vacation, I laughed at the part where the attorney decided at the last minute to not go on his family’s vacation in Mexico because…reasons.
I also found it odd that the ‘friends’ were mad at the girl who got conned out of $60k for diming Anna out. I was bemused at how they kept going back to the well of “you don’t rat out your friends” when their friend was in actuality a literal con artist.
It was one of those times where you leave a series realizing there’s really no protagonist. Anna was rotten as hell, her friends were awful, the people she conned were terrible, the journalist sucked, and the lawyer sucked.

She forged documents.
Check out Generation Hustle on HBO max. Fun documentary series about cons and scams. Anna has a 45 minute episode.
Very much to the point and you can tell exactly how much Netflix added to make it 8 episodes or so. Easily could have been a 90 minute movie

Watching the last episode for Inventing Anna tonight. Will be glad I'm finished with it.

Yes it's real, and there are multiple docs out about it on various streaming platforms. I knew about that long before I ever knew about Anna. The docs are great. It's really enjoyable to watch dumb rich kids get played.

Im a few episodes in so I haven't seen it all or read through the thread yet but currently I'm wondering how much is accurate. I guess ill look it up afterwards but not sure how something like that could be pulled off for long. Netflix doing typical Netflix shite so far though.
ETA: love seeing Anders getting work. I always like to see the workaholics guys getting parts lol.

Then the real Anna Sorkin needs to be thrown into a fricking AIDS fire based on her annoying accent alone.

After finishing it, like I suspected, I am not surprised Netflix made her into the hero of the story.
I mean people do dumb shite and everyone deserves a second chance and all that (and she didn't kill anyone). But she was clearly nuts and the whole "Scriberia" wing of the office rooting for Not Guilty verdicts was cringe.
In the show she constantly talks about "how close" she was to getting the money. If she really thought that, she should be thanking God she didn't get the money or she would have been in much more trouble I'd assume. But the whole "frat boy network who does that sort of stuff everyday" angle was pretty absurd.

Im on episode 4. I like it. I went and watched the interview on 60 min with the real Anna. She is just a bitch and laughs wayyyyy too much when she is lying. She thinks she never made anyone believe she was a rich heiress and if they thought that then they were dumb. I wanted to kick her in the fricking face.
