I literally posted this in the Endgame thread, got downvoted like crazy, and was told this was a horrible way to measure popularity of movies.
I get there are differences in the way we watch movies, and other options, etc.
But it’s still an amazing stat. The only thing that comes close in my lifetime to the mania surrounding GWTW is Titanic

They weren't going up against a list of classics like that
You think they were all at the theater at the same time? Admittedly this was a strong year in movies, but I'm sure they were spread out throughout the year.

Gone With the Wind was a huge film that thrived from it's re-releases between 1942 and 1967 more than anything, it was the fourth high grossing movies of the 1960's despite being released in 1939.
I'd also love to know where Rocky Horror actually falls in total tickets sold since it's played in theaters in multiple cities at least once a night for something like 16,000 consecutive days.

Titanic had a 41 week theater run, per box office mojo.
True. But it was #1 at the box office for 14-15 consecutive weeks.

As was noted - up until VHS if you saw a movie you liked the only way you’d ever see it again was to go back to the theatre. I think Star Wars finally made it to TV 7 years after being in the theatre.

1. Gone with the Wind (1939)
Estimated admissions: 201 million tickets
To be fair, this also had the benefit of the fact that air conditioning was super-rare in homes at the time but was a staple of movie theaters.
Well known movie, big names, A/C in a hot summer.

Expecting this to be making a come back thanks to anti-vaxxers.

It opened wide in theaters in the month of January. My grandparents lived in Illinois at the time and they said the line to see this movie was something else. It wrapped around the movie theater.

You can’t ignore the fact that entertainment choices were slightly different a century ago. It’s not like people had to open the paper to really peruse their options when Gone With The Wind was playing.
