Blade Runner

Patton

Pulp Fiction

Goodfellas

The Outlaw Josey Wales

(That was way easier than I thought it would be.)

I'm not sure why someone else's opinion of a movie bothers you. Can't wait to see your list. (I won't judge)

J.F.K. is an amazing movie. If I could pick any movie to watch again for the 1st time like I hadn't seen it yet, that'd be it. It's just so cool how Oliver Stone pieced it all together using real footage with reenactment and so forth. Such an interesting movie with an outstanding cast.

If we ignore how crazy it was for Garrison to push the narrative about "crazy, right wingers killed JFK" - and how inaccurate and unsupportable that was from an objective standpoint - it is Oliver Stone's best (albeit cocaine fueled and delusional) film, perhaps excluding Platoon.

Ghostbusters (1984)
the Thing (1982)
Dredd (2012)
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)

Too many for me to pick a 5th. These 4 I'm pretty solid on. Can watch them over and over.

Stone's movies are visually stunning but my enjoyment is severely tempered by his insane alternate view of history. Costner's Foghorn Leghorn accent didn't help.

Meh. I'm not as turned off by his accent in JFK as I am by Quaid's terrible yat in The Big Easy, although clearly both of them tried (and failed).

(John Goodman has actually picked up a slight New Orleans accent, so I let him pass now.)

But the acting in JFK was pretty solid - considering that the least over-the-top supporting character was played extremely well by Pesci - and the eccentric performances by Candy, Bacon, Jones, Asner and Oldman just seemed to fight right in with Stone's cocaine fueled, paranoid vision of 1963 to 1970 or so. So, visually, yes - a feast (particularly the magic bullet stuff, the recreation of the assassination, "triangulation" and so forth). But the acting was also exceptional for such a movie.

It was the crazy script that doesn't let one fully suspend disbelief.

There's obviously a difference between the 5 best movies and your 5 favorite movies

Absolutely. Huge difference... I'd say the 5 "best" films of all time would be...

~ The Godfather
~ Gone With The Wind
~ Apocalypse Now
~ The Wizard of Oz
~ Citizen Kane

Which none of those are in my top 5 favorite. In fact, only 1 of them would be in my top 10 favorite. But, I can still point out that they're probably the 5 best made movies of all time.

Agreed. Although I think my 5 are candidates for best film of all time - I picked those because those are the 5 I have watched over and over - for decades in some cases. The next 2 candidates for my list are probably Gross Pointe Blank and Ghostbusters. I think 2001, Casablanca, Godfather are all rightfully considered higher on the "GOAT" movie list (but maybe not - I mean, I'm listing Blade Runner, Patton, Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas and The Outlaw Josey Wales - none of those movies are slouches and can hold their own, critically), but I haven't connected with those as much as the ones on my list.

This is a good review right here... But let me ask you, what's up with all this Oliver Stone being coked up talk? You've mentioned that twice. Did he openly admit to using cocaine while making JFK or something? Just wondering because I haven't heard that before. Guess I can look it up.

He had a wicked cocaine habit. Scarface was supposedly his way of dealing with it, but you can see the residual effects if nothing else in the direction of his films, the paranoia, the jitteriness - that shines through in his films all the way to the Born on the 4th of July (and JFK) - maybe he was getting clean about that time, but that's the way I see it.

I mean, cocaine during the late 70s to early 90s is no big secret, right? I mean, Stephen King would love to direct another movie because he would like to experience what that would be like while not on cocaine (Maximum Overdrive - great flick - but coke was EVERYWHERE. Even the Goblin truck was on cocaine. )
