Didn't Jack Sparrow show Elizabeth Swann his compass in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest? He gets eaten by the Kraken at the end.

Rambo showed Co his knife, that had a compass in the handle, in First Blood: Part 2. Movie didn’t end so well for her, but he turned out alright considering.

Nah he has the compass in almost every movie. And he survives the Kraken technically. Tons of other characters own the compass at one point or another and survive as well. The compass from Pirates was the first example I thought of as a counterexample to OP

At the time he states that, he doesn't know that he's not dead.
